Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Klarke Taylor. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Klarke, thank you so much for making time for us today. Let’s jump right into a question so many in our community are looking for answers to – how to overcome creativity blocks, writer’s block, etc. We’d love to hear your thoughts or any advice you might have.
Upon reflection, it becomes clear that one’s mindset is vital for any venture. A healthy mindset contributes to artistic success and aids in overcoming writer’s block. In the beginning, I struggled with fear of exposure, but now, perfectionism is my main challenge. I try to conquer this by redirecting my focus inward, away from perceived audience expectations and more toward what I want to write about. It boils down to understanding that I cannot always satisfy both readers and myself. This removes a lot of pressure from me when writing.
Furthermore, the most effective method for conquering perfectionism is to let your writing flow and refrain from being overly critical. Recognizing that sharing my art demands courage and fortitude has sparked an inner strength that enables me to write without constraints. As you lay down all the words on paper, the story or poem gradually emerges. Keep in mind that regardless of your level of skill
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
The most exhilarating aspect of being a creative writer is the autonomy it provides to craft in any way I desire. This is because creative freedom is the most valuable thing to me. While I have been encouraged to pursue writing as a profession, what I love the most is not having to conform to what others expect. Lately, my creative focus has shifted towards writing for short films, in addition to my staple of short stories and poetry. I have always dreamt of becoming a short story writer, confident that my unique ideas and perspective can contribute something fresh to the world of short films.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The most valuable advice I can offer to any creative is to keep immersing yourself in life and interacting with people. This is where your unfiltered inspiration originates and where you can exercise qualities such as patience, curiosity, and risk-taking. I learned that when I am confined indoors, my well of inspiration runs dry. Finding inspiration can be as simple as taking a stroll downtown to people-watch or capturing images of local trees. It is all about discovering and appreciating the beauty and challenges of this world.
Looking back over the past 12 months or so, what do you think has been your biggest area of improvement or growth?
My most significant area of growth and improvement has been in designing cover art for my poems and short stories. Each time I create a new piece, I find myself completing the artwork faster than before, allowing me to share my work more swiftly. I can only imagine where I will be in the next 12 months.
