Meet Kolor

We recently connected with Kolor and have shared our conversation below.

Kolor , so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?
So, I’ve relocated from my home town a year ago and I was so timid having first arrived. As a queer black act it felt challenging to stand alone in a room full of other artists. Society has a way of quietly normalizing certain aesthetics and hiding behind a fake vail of inclusivity. I think that understanding the fact that this is apart of being a trailblazer in any industry is a key role in overcoming this obstacle. Experiencing moments where i don’t see myself represented has acted as a call to action for me. Being different from the norm doesn’t always warrant warm responses. I’ve learned in my career However, that the ability to entertain is undeniable! Honing in on your craft is the only viable option that benefits you as an artist. As a musician/entertainer the market (these days) seems so saturated and milked with cash grabs, automated streams, and industry backing. Even with that being said, it all really boils down to what can you do on the stage!! Knowing what I bring to the table and letting my music speak for itself it’s my GO TO!!

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
So I’m a Musician from Miami! 305 STAND UP!! It really all started professionally for me about 9-10 years ago. Before then I was just the kid you knew from all the talent shows in school or for selling CD’s of my first actual music on the streets!!! I was that kid rapping and singing all the way at the back of the bus, banging on the tables with pens during breakfast time. Fast forward to now and I’m a fully realized, and professional artist. My dad was a musician and engineer so I grew up musically inclined. I write, sing, produce, and choreograph everything you see from me. Every song, every beat and lyric is carefully crafted to curate the “Kolor” brand and aesthetic.

As far a these days, My new Single
“Rely on” will be releasing on July 31rst
And I’m so excited about this new direction that I’m entering sonically. I’ve been in love with the freedom that comes with this new “dance era” of music. I pride myself in being versatile and not limiting myself by genre so this is definitely something you guys haven’t heard from me!!

I’m also so proud to announce the start of my First Business!!!

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
1.Be consistent 2. Take networking seriously!
3. Surround yourself with people who support you. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen people let others bring them down or keep the stagnant.

My advice would be to make sure this is what you want to do….I don’t see nothing else for my life..my future. Not a day goes by without me doing music in any capacity. If your not passionate enough it won’t go anywhere!!

What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
It may come off as taboo but breathing is so important. Taking a deep breath is pivotal in changing an overwhelming experience. Asses the facts, then confirm the goal. There’s several routes to the same Destination so if something isn’t working, step back and check out some other options. It’s not the end of the world and it literally never is!! You got this!!!
