Meet Kony Brooks

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kony Brooks. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Kony, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?

I come from a family of sports and music lovers. My older brother was my original role model. He was a DJ and Producer as well as a city ranked basketball player. In the first grade I had a poetry project and decided to write a rap verse for it. I showed my brother in hopes that he’d love it and he actually couldn’t stand it (lol). From there, I took the next few years to actually learn the art in order to make him like it. During that time I began to love music.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I am a Hip Hop artist from the Bronx, NY. I’m a lyricist first. I create my own music but I also ghostwrite for other artists and I run an independent record label. The most exciting part of my process is creating. I get to really disconnect from the business and tap into what made me fall in love with the music. I love locking myself in a room with beats and pushing my limits creatively. In that space, I’m allowed to let my energy flow and focus on how to market it later.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Three qualities I found most impactful on my journey thus far are resilience, originality, and loyalty. I feel that each quality guides me and grounds me as a creative learning to navigate the business side of an industry that’s always evolving. I would tell artists early in their journey to never give in to the pressures of conforming. Be yourself unapologetically because there’s a market that will support you. I would also tell them to believe in their vision. It’s okay to pivot but stand on your morals.

Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?

“Relational Intelligence” by Dr. Dharius Daniels. This book taught me about how to place people in my life. We shouldn’t give people titles in our lives that don’t actually align with the roles they play. That translated to setting healthy boundaries with my industry friends/clientele and being able to acknowledge/evaluate these relationships. Things change and relationships shift, so being in the mindset of alignment and discernment has helped me shift and change with them.
