We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Korey Espinoza a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Korey, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
I was raised mostly by my dad growing up. He has always been a firm believer in problem solving and perseverance. I think that is a big reason for why I am who I am today. My dad has never looked at an issue and said “well there’s nothing I can do.” Instead he’s always trying to find possible solutions. As a kid, he pushed me to do the same. Rather than handing me the solution, we’d talk about it. Open discussions like that often led me to my own solutions; Many of which failed in the process, but I think I needed that challenge. It pushed me to learn how to trust my own instincts and how to stand strong on my own. I don’t think I’d have the ability to bounce back as quickly if it weren’t for my dad.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am a creative model and a singer. Ever since I was small, I have been an artistic and expressive individual. I started singing very young and entered my first talent show in 4th grade. My dad actually didn’t think I was going to go through with it; I was terribly shy at that age, (I know MANY would refuse to believe that now) but I did, and I won 2nd place. After that I couldn’t get enough. I joined the musical theater program in highschool and even auditioned for the voice. After highschool, I did a lot of live performances at different restaurants and venues. And then Covid hit. As it did for most, it turned my world upside down. Since then, I have recorded some music with friends, filmed a couple music videos and done some live performances, with more to come in the near future!
My modeling career started when I met my girlfriend, Dalia, about 3 years ago. She had been modeling for a few years already when we met, and immediately I was drawn into the work she did. Quite honestly, it felt intoxicating and I wanted to experience more. I wanted to tell stories and get gruesome and expressive and lose myself in the entirety of it all. Because I’m blessed with such an amazing partner, Dalia held out her hand and welcomed me into her artistic world. We have been able to create soooo many amazing things together and I am just so grateful for that. I have so much excitement to see what this next year holds for us and our creative careers. This is just the beginning!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Having a musical theater background made jumping into modeling a lot easier for me. I already had a basic knowledge of self expression and body control. Which really made all of the other things I was learning fall into place like puzzle pieces. Another thing I would say that’s helped me a ton along the way is networking and being a social person. I absolutely love talking to people, and I’ve made some of the best relationships in the creative community because of it. Lastly, and to me this is most important, being supportive of others in the creative community is HUGE! We are all out here trying to do the same thing- what we LOVE. There is no reason for competition, judgement, or gatekeeping. The more time we spend lifting each other up, the stronger our creative community can be. It’s so much easier to love and be who you are when you are supported and have a safe space.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I am always looking for new people to work with! When it comes to photography, I am definitely looking to expand into more commercial work, as well as continuing with editorial. I have also been wanting to expand my connections in the music industry. I miss performing live for an audience and collaborating with other musicians. Instagram (@koreyespinoza_) is typically the best way to reach me, but I believe my email is on there as well.
