We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Korry O’Brien. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Korry below.
Hi Korry , thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.
To be honest, I am still battling imposter syndrome…I’d like to think that it is an ongoing battle for all creatives. Though, it is a fraction of a worry. Strangely enough, being rejected has helped in my battle with imposter syndrome. Not getting a certain role or opportunity fuels my fire- and it inspires me to create my own avenues. I have accomplished a lot to this day, but I have a ways to go. Trailblazing is my key to overcoming imposter syndrome.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I’m an actor, writer, and creative director who’s passionate about storytelling from the black perspective—whether that’s on screen, on stage, or behind the scenes. What excites me most about acting is how unpredictable this journey can be. One week I’m on set for my own projects, the next I’m in a room with people I once only watched on TV or heard on the radio. Then I’m back stage or on TV sets, next to the greats before me. It’s been wild! My brand is authentic art, regardless of what it is. I like to reach from experienced or lived moments. I have two short films that are soon to come out. Looking for Love is a drama comedy in resemblance to Insecure, but about how I met the love of my life while finding my creative path. It’s being filmed now, and an untiled horror film that you will have to tune in to see that after the release of the first film.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back, the 3 things that were most impactful during my early journey was my willingness to adapt and learn, knowing how to navigate a room, and learning that you are the spokesperson for your brand/image at all times- you can control your narrative. If you are early in your journey, my advice would be to remain you and stay connected to your art or vision. Dont be so eager to search for the “leg up” opportunity- create your own opportunities. When you are really tapped into yourself, your potential and your craft…things like adapting, navigating rooms and developing your brand comes naturally.

What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?
My biggest area of growth has definitely been allowing for my full personality to show on camera and during social events. In the past, I have been so worried about being PC, not offending the wrong crowd and ultimately being marketable until i hit my wall. You cannot please everyone so it is best that you remain grounded and allow your crowd to naturally attract to you. Trust me, they will come.
