Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Krissy Koenig. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Krissy , really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
I have always been creative, artistic….I’ve always enjoyed tattooing especially doing scars cover ups …in 2022 I got some pretty awful news. I had metastatic breast cancer. At 43 years old I was facing a difficult fight with even harder decisions. I chose to have a double mastectomy. After months of healing I started chemotherapy followed by radiation….it was humbling beyond words. As women we identify with our appearance…our hair…makeup..physique. here I was at 43 years old bald, with both of my breast’s gone not recognizing the woman looking back at me in the mirror. Burned from radiation…covered in scars…trying to figure out this new version of myself. I embraced it. My breast’s fed my children…but I don’t need them anymore. I am more than my chest. I chose no reconstruction. So since my surgery I have had the opportunity and incredible honor to tattoo multiple women who have gone through the same cancer battle as I have. I am able to connect on a far deeper level with them now…and I believe it has made my customers more comfortable and trusting knowing I truly know what they are going through. I have also partnered with a local organization that helps victims of sex trafficking…I will cover brand tattoo on victims of the sex trafficking trade. Helping them move past that awful nightmare. Like I said…I’ve always loved tattooing…but now I do it on such a deeper level. Covering scars with beauty…tattooing an areola on a woman who lost hers. Flowers over an abdominal surgical scar. A mandala design over self harm scarring. A forest scene over a burn scar. People get tattooed for so many reasons…love. memories..loss..and sometimes they are just band aids for broken hearts. I’m the lucky one to be a part of their journey. Tattooing has humbled me. I love everything about it. I don’t know if cancer was God’s way of showing me my purpose…but I definitely feel it changed the trajectory of my my life and the way I think.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I have been a tattoo artist for the last 19 years. I love Adorning people with beautiful color and images. I especially enjoy covering scars and old tattoos with new beautiful art. I opened my own private tattoo suite in February of 2024…after some health issues I had .the realization that life is so so short…I decided to take the plunge and open up my very own private tattoo suite. I wanted a space where everyone would feel safe , comfortable and unjudged no matter what they were getting.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I feel like I can read people pretty well and I feel I’m easy to talk to…with tattooing it’s a very very personal thing…someone is trusting you with their body. It’s my job to figure out through conversation exactly what they want tattooed. And then make my customers feel comfortable throughout the process. I had a very strong art back ground before I started my tattoo journey and that has helped me immensely. Customer service and connection are key in this industry. Draw draw draw….
What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?
With opening up my own tattoo suite…my biggest struggle is the work/ home balance. I’m only one person. It’s been difficult to find the time balance..I work very long days and between the calls texts and messages…im trying to balance my time appropriately…its a struggle. I’m a workaholic. I love what I do.
