We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Krista Lee Locklin. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Krista below.
Krista, so great to be with you and I think a lot of folks are going to benefit from hearing your story and lessons and wisdom. Imposter Syndrome is something, but it’s something that has held people back forever and so we’re really interested to hear about your story and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
Imposter syndrome seems to be a common experience in the photography world. For me, it usually makes its presence known when I take on new projects or projects that are out of my comfort zone. When I start to feel imposter syndrome, I walk through everything in my head that I am worried about and find solutions. This gives me a sense of security and preparedness. Another thing that really helps me move past imposter syndrome is doing whatever activity is making me feel this way. I always try to remind myself that although I feel anxiety before doing something new, I always feel great after.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am a photographer specializing in graduation photos, family portraits, events, and more, located in South Florida. What I feel is most exciting about this line of work is being invited to spaces to photograph events, or people I otherwise would probably not have a chance to interact with. I have been able to work with many talented individuals, showcasing them, or their work and I love being able to do that!
Something new lately for me is that I am actually opening a photography studio in Davie, Florida March 2024! My studio will be located on Griffin Rd close to the Hard Rock Hotel and NSU Florida. This all started on January 1st of this year when I made a New Year’s resolution to do more studio sessions. To my surprise, this resolution manifested into finding a beautiful studio space for my business to call home. I am so excited to incorporate fun studio photoshoots into my schedule for any occasion such as graduation, holidays, birthdays, family sessions, business headshots/branding and more! Stay tuned to hear about opening events coming up late February/Early March 2024.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Three qualities, skills or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in my journey were my creativity, my passion for photography and my ability to achieve a goal when I really put my mind to it. If you are early in your journey I would suggest getting in as much practice as you can working on the goal/skill you are trying to reach or develop. Practice is the only way to keep improving!
Do you think it’s better to go all in on our strengths or to try to be more well-rounded by investing effort on improving areas you aren’t as strong in?
I do not believe that there is a better option, I think that whatever you feel is right is what you should pursue. I have gone all in on my strengths in the past as well as focused on improving areas that I wasn’t as strong in. I believe that both experiences helped me get to where I am today and that they were both needed. When I first started photography, I was learning so many new things and it took a lot of practice to even get a well-lit photo in my camera. Learning new things in photography and working on improving my skills allowed me to get to the point where I can go all in on my strengths now and continue to advance in my business.
