Meet Kristal Ruiz

We were lucky to catch up with Kristal Ruiz recently and have shared our conversation below.

Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Kristal with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?

My parents! They moved our family from Mexico to San Diego and growing up I watched them work really hard to make it in this country. They taught me the importance of hard work, resiliency and discipline. This motivated in school, college and now in my professional life.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

Hi! I’m Kristal, a mat-Pilates instructor based in San Diego, CA. I completed my Pilates certification in 2019 and started teaching reformer Pilates at local studios. Fast forward a few years and now have my own thriving online Pilates studio. So you’re probably wondering how I went from teaching reformer Pilates to starting my own business. I was in Costa Rica visiting friends in 2022 and I started to think about what I could do that I was really passionate about. I started to list the things I love: wellness, fitness and travel. And then it clicked! I could start hosting international wellness treats. It would allow me to travel, teach Pilates and connect with women worldwide. So I came back to San Diego and started a new Instagram page for this new business idea. It took some brainstorming but finally landed on the business name, myPilates Purpose; this business would bring purpose to my life and the life of other women. I started posting workouts on my Instagram page everyday and within 6 months my page grew to over 100k followers! It was amazing and unexpected. I started to envision more opportunities for my business and decided to start filming full length workouts to post online. Fast forward to July 2023 and I launched my own app myPilates Purpose! It’s been an incredible journey and I now get to workout with hundreds of women all over the world. I have yet to host a retreat but it’s still on my heart to do them in the future. But that’s how it all started!

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

The most important quality that has helped me build my business is my ambition. Owning a business has a lot of ups and downs! There have been moments I’ve felt discouraged and wanted to give up, BUT I keep my goals/vision in mind and that keeps me going. My advice to you is to always remember your why.

Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?

Life is all about BALANCE. I could literally work on my business 24/7 haha. But that would be super unhealthy and lead to burn out quickly. I do my best at keeping a good routine and doing things I love. Obviously there might be days/weeks where I need to work more, but I always bring it back to a balance. I have to remind myself Rome wasn’t built overnight lol
