Kristen, so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
I keep my creativity alive by embracing variety and staying open to new experiences. Whether it’s exploring different dance styles, experimenting with graphic design techniques, or immersing myself in diverse forms of art, I constantly seek inspiration from the world around me. Additionally, maintaining a balance between structured routines and spontaneous moments allows me to keep my creative juices flowing. Collaborating with other artists and regularly challenging myself with fresh projects also plays a crucial role in nurturing and evolving my creativity.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am a versatile creative, specializing in dance and choreography. As a professional choreographer/dancer, I travel and teach and am based in atl and was raised in Florida. What truly excites me about what I do is the fact my days never look the same. I look forward to each and every day differently. Just Recently, I released a dance film titled “Incomplete Thought,” a dance film that delves into the complexities of mental health, bringing thoughts to life or retaining them within. On another front, as the Artistic Director of ‘I Am The Brand Co.,’ I’m currently immersed in crafting a fresh line of merchandise set to debut in the upcoming Spring/Summer season.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I think the three most important things that were the most impactful for my journey and will forever be are faith, flexibility, and determination. Faith, always believing that where I am is where I am called to be and the knowing that everything is aligning in my favor, losses and all. Flexibility because in this industry, things happen so fast…being prepared for any and everything. I often say stay ready so you don’t have to get ready and being flexible comes with that. Determination because it comes from within and the knowing that you are created for more. Putting in the hard work and making sacrifices to get to where you need to be will always be rewarding. The seeds you plant don’t sprout the same day. Be patient and rest int that.
A big piece of advice is to know who you are and walk boldly in your purpose knowing who sent you. When I say boldly I don’t mean cocky or being the loudest in the room but being comfortable and confident with who you are and the season of life you’re in. Embrace you, learn you, and always keep pressing forward.
What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?
The biggest area of growth for me in the past 12 months is fully embracing who I am. Who I am not only as a creative but as a human as well. How I foster relationships, my faith, self-care…literally everything! I went through a season of isolation and all I was doing was taking care of me and learning who I was outside of what everyone labeled me. I recently moved to Atlanta as well and that changed my career and view on life. being in isolation though, I was able see and fully embrace who all God has called me to be and learn how to balance work and my personal life. When it came to growth within work, I had to free myself from always looking out and only look within. Telling myself constantly that this is what I create and this is my idea and I embrace this project or idea with open arms. The last year I feel like i tapped into a side of me I would’ve never found if I didn’t take that step back and spend that time self reflecting, intense prayer, and quieting everything around me.
