We recently connected with Kristen Poulter and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kristen, thank you so much for making time for us today. Let’s jump right into a question so many in our community are looking for answers to – how to overcome creativity blocks, writer’s block, etc. We’d love to hear your thoughts or any advice you might have.
When I encounter the rare occasion of writer’s block as a poet and lyricist, I take a moment to step back and observe the world around me. From the challenges of war, racism, inequality, and poverty to the heartbreak and suffering of children, I find a wealth of inspiration in the struggles that surround us. These reflections stir something deep within me, compelling me to pick up my pen and let the emotions flow onto the page.
My journey in overcoming creative blocks began early on, as I’ve been a published poet since I was 12. Over the years, I’ve honed my ability to channel the world’s pain and beauty into my writing. Whether it’s the anguish of heartbreak or the hope for a better future, the raw emotions and stories I witness fuel my creativity.
I also draw inspiration from my short story writings and from my experiences in text-based role play groups. I spent many years in these groups, even building some of them myself. These groups were a unique way to trick kids into improving their reading comprehension and writing skills. Reflecting on the characters I played and the storylines I created for them continually inspires me. These experiences taught me to view writing as a collaborative and dynamic process, enriching my approach to poetry and lyrics.
When I face my own personal struggles, I also turn to writing. It becomes a therapeutic process, allowing me to express and process my emotions. This dual approach—drawing from both the world’s challenges and my own experiences—ensures that I never stay blocked for long. The stories that need to be told and the emotions that need to be shared always find their way onto the page, reminding me of the power and purpose of my craft.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
My name is Kristen Poulter, but many know me by my pen name, Moon. I’m the girl with too many hobbies, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. My journey encompasses a myriad of roles—poet, lyricist, composer, independent artist, radio DJ, founder of an independent label, Amazon influencer, Tim Burton brand ambassador, wildlife rehabilitator, Google and Microsoft developer, animator, ordained minister, nurse, mom, and a very young grandmother at 38, among many others.
What I find most exciting and special about what I do is the endless opportunity to create and inspire. Whether I’m crafting lyrics, composing music, or sharing my poetry, each endeavor allows me to connect deeply with others, conveying emotions and stories that resonate on a personal level. My work as a wildlife rehabilitator brings me close to nature, while my tech roles with Google and Microsoft keep me on the cutting edge of innovation.
Recently, I launched a new podcast called “Poetic Moon Poetry,” where I share my poetry with listeners across all platforms. This project is incredibly close to my heart, as it allows me to reach a broader audience and share the power of words in a new and exciting format. I’m also exploring the idea of starting another podcast focused on supporting independent artists, though this might be a collaborative effort on someone else’s platform.
In addition to my podcasting ventures, I’m thrilled to announce that I am a finalist for Female Songwriter of the Year from the International Singer Songwriters Association. The award show and red carpet event will take place on August 24, 2024, in Atlanta, Georgia, and I’m honored to be recognized among such talented peers.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
In my journey, three qualities that have been most impactful are creativity, resilience, and versatility. These have shaped not only my career but also my approach to life and all its endeavors.
**Creativity:** This has been the cornerstone of my work as a poet, lyricist, and composer. Creativity isn’t just about coming up with new ideas; it’s about seeing the world differently and finding unique ways to express those perspectives. For those early in their journey, my advice is to cultivate curiosity. Read widely, experience different cultures, and allow yourself to be inspired by everything around you. Creativity thrives in an open mind, so never stop learning and exploring.
**Resilience:** The ability to bounce back from setbacks is crucial. Whether it’s dealing with writer’s block, facing rejection, or navigating personal struggles, resilience has allowed me to keep moving forward. To develop resilience, embrace challenges as opportunities for growth. Don’t be afraid to fail, and when you do, learn from it. Surround yourself with supportive people who encourage you to persevere, and remember that every setback is a setup for a comeback.
**Versatility:** Wearing many hats has been one of the most rewarding aspects of my journey. From being a nurse to a wildlife rehabilitator, and a Google developer to a radio DJ, my diverse skill set has opened countless doors. For those starting out, I recommend embracing versatility by trying out different roles and skills. Don’t box yourself into one identity or career path. The more skills you acquire, the more adaptable you’ll become, making you more resilient and creative in the face of new challenges.
In summary, to develop these qualities, be curious and open to new experiences, embrace challenges, and continually expand your skill set. By doing so, you’ll not only enrich your journey but also prepare yourself to handle whatever comes your way.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I am always looking for vocalists to collaborate with, particularly to cover the songs I write. While I cannot afford to cover their studio time, I can share any revenue the song generates. If you are a vocalist interested in working together and bringing my lyrics to life, I would love to connect with you.
