We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kristen Wasyliszyn. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kristen below.
Kristen, thank you so much for joining us. You are such a positive person and it’s something we really admire and so we wanted to start by asking you where you think your optimism comes from?
My fear of being a drag.
Reframing works well. Shifting the “I have to” to, “I get to” has helped keep me positive.
AND I’ve always had something, someone or someplace to look forward to- mini optimism packages)
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
In the early 90’s I sold life insurance to hard-working farmers door to door, in Wisconsin. I followed them, as they worked, listened to their off beat stories and more than once was jokingly led into manure piles. Not ha ha.
The world’s second toughest job that I wasn’t- making- a -living- at. Finally, I said, “screw it, I’m just going to have fun, I’m broke anyway.”
Chucking the canned presentation, I began active hearing. Once I listened to people and their stories, I found most people to be playful, hilarious and generally kind, my life became a whole lot more joyous.
So, my brand per se, though not polished, magnifies playfulness, radical truth and twisted optimism. My job now, is to find and woo readers that will be moved by my novel.
My debut novel, Why Is My Bra Still On? is an extension of that fun. I hope.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
1. Tenacity
2. Self-awareness (learning to change when something doesn’t “feel right”)
3. Using facts as predictors, jumping into new ideas or mindsets without the chains of “I’ve always done it this way.”
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I’d rather promote someone I believe in than myself.
The “pick me!” aspect of marketing my book is well, gross, necessary but -ew.
Open to and willing to collaborate with and promote other like- minded creatives in a mutual advancement sort of way))
