We were lucky to catch up with Kristian Gilmore recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kristian, thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.
This may sound cliche but it doesn’t make it less truthful… one day you will die. Now I know that sounds morbid but honestly we spend most of our time trying to escape death as if it doesn’t come anyway. I am more aware of the time God allowed me to have , now do I have a exact time/ day of my death of course not but I shouldn’t waste my life. Somebody is counting on me to open or help open doors not braggingly but humanistically. If a thought comes across my mind I try as much as I can to completely disable that thought, does it work every time no, but is it getting better.. yes!
I honestly don’t think it’s something we overcome entirely I think it is just based off fear , a natural human emotion that we will experience for the rest of our life when it comes to the unknown. I say take the step or lose the chance but know its there to bring out a version of you that you didn’t know existed. I stared my podcast (Not Hiding Sh*t : The Kristian Experience) based off that example and here I am two years later still figuring it out and having opportunities like this to share my story .
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am a creative using many outlets to display my love of creation, I do that by podcasting( Not Hiding Sh*t : The Kristian Experience ) directing my first documentary and motivational speaking. I started my podcasting based off the fact I knew there was something more to life than me working and coming home when it came to me. I have always had my hands busy with something a project or an idea. I just wanted to ‘do’ but as I got older I wanted to ‘do’ with a purpose. My purpose is connecting with people no matter the background or history and inspiring them to keep their head in the game not just in their career but life itself. Life is heavy and it will test you amongst other things I wanted my listeners / supporters to know you are not alone. In life and in humanity we do it together anyway so why not give you some examples from my own life?
As for the directing /motivational speaking those were dreams I buried that are coming back around and im grateful to get a second chance at doing it not many people can say the same. It is very new and I’m confused and scared most of the time but those are temporary emotions I want see past that to see what God has for me and what I can do with it. With no staff and no sponsors starting from ground up heading into a long journey but at least Im walking a path that change my life for the better.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
First have some form of spirituality, Jesus is mine and always more than worth a try, but you need to find what works for you to keep you grounded and overall a better person your heart is more important than your passion. Secondly, never stop searching for who you are and what you like, we are creatures of habit so make it a habit to change. It can be your mind, your style , your eating habits whatever you need. It is so much more to who you are than who you are right now so make the effort. Thirdly, be studious we are in the greatest age of information from books to the internet and TED Talks meaning its all available mostly all the time. We all have many dreams and I don’t find it a fluke that their are resources that are paired with what we want to do while we’re here.
My advice is to know you gift ALOT because some people will try to tell you what it is and wether or not its enough to exist in the first place. I am not the expert on how life works (none of us are really we pretend so we can have a source a reality )for us to feel normal… so have fun with who YOU decide to be. While you are at it give it some grace and space to be imperfect and a mess before you find your version of being content.
Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
I am learning rest. We live in such a demanding society of getting things done at the expense of our mental/emotional and physical health it scary and very concerning. I would stay up all hours sometimes working on visions knowing I had work the next morning and being crazy exhausted. My sister who is like my right hand explained to me it doesn’t make me less valuable or successful for making time for myself to just exist. I know when I’m being lazy and I know when I’m really tired and I have to stop fighting my body from trying to rest so it can have the renewed energy ready to go for me.
I try to schedule time to take a nap or visit with friends or something to regain just Kristian not Kristian the creative. Both are important but the creative side doesn’t exist or doesn’t preform at the rate she could or should if I don’t sleep or drink my water. Know that rest comes in many forms so don’t be quick to label something as lazy without understanding why.
