Meet Kristin Garrett

We were lucky to catch up with Kristin Garrett recently and have shared our conversation below.

Kristin , thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?

I keep my creativity alive by following and expanding on my passion for jewelry making. And sharing my passion for crafting and creativity with others.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I absolutely love crafting of all types. But my true passion is jewelry making. I have been making beaded jewelry since I was in my early teens. I was introduced to it and taught by my Aunt and fell in love with it. I love being able to make gifts for family and friends. Over the years I have expanded into making other items and other types of jewelry using different mediums. I’ve expanded into using epoxy resin to make jewelry and other items such as trinket dishes and coasters. And just recently I’ve started using polymer clay to make jewelry. I am constantly trying new and exciting ways to expand on my passion for jewelry making. I’ve also started selling my jewelry at local farmers markets and craft shows. I absolutely love that I get to share my passion with my community through these events. Also, I am so grateful for the feed back I have received from the people at these events. Inspiration comes in many forms. A lot of inspiration for me comes from the wonderful advice and ideas that are shared between vendors, other craft makers, and the people attending the events.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

The qualities that I feel were most important in my journey are… first patience. I use this skill daily to learn my craft and learn from mistakes and mishaps. Second is determination. I used this skill to get started, and continue to use it to set goals and expand on my craft. And third is communication. I use this skill a lot at farmers markets and craft shows. Also I use this skill to ask for help and advice from others when I need it. Whether it be jewelry making and crafting advice. Or personal advice from family and friends.

My advice to others is to not be afraid to take chances, try new things, and learn new skills. Also to talk and get advice from people who have experience in your field. Learn from those people to better you journey.

Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?

When I feel overwhelmed I stop what I’m currently doing and still myself for a moment. I close my eyes and take a calming breath in and out. I then assess the issue I am having. Then list my ideas to solve the issue. I work through the issue one step at a time until the issue gets resolved. I also ask advice from my family. These steps work the best for me. And I recommend them to everyone.
