Meet Kristin Komander

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kristin Komander. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Kristin with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
I would say I get my work ethic from my Dad. He has always been a hard-worker throughout his entire life and has always had an entrepreneurial mindset. He’s run several different businesses and is always coming up with new ideas and designs for things. I have been inspired by my Dad and I have always wanted to own my own business that I can have the creative freedom with to do the same.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am a professional photographer serving the Southeastern Michigan and surrounding areas. My primary focus is on children’s portraits and family photography. I enjoy those two niches the most. I strive to provide exceptional client service, communication, and a quick turnaround on gallery delivery.

Currently we are getting ready for Easter sessions where we will have the Easter Bunny here for portraits in a relaxed setting so the kids are comfortable, not rushed, and also get great pictures they can treasure for years to come! If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The three most important would probably be: client service, (which I have had over 12 years experience in), adaptability (changing what doesn’t work and finding ways that do), and education from those that are successful (you want to learn from those who are where you want to be).

My advice to those early in their journey is to:

1-Educate yourself as much as you can about all things revolving around your business or product so that you are able to deliver the best possible service or product you can. And keep educating yourself, there is always more to learn.

2-Focus on your client service and place a high priority on making every part of that exceptional. Communication is huge, be responsive. Change the things in your business that don’t work or are inefficient, don’t stay stuck in the same place. There’s always a better way.

3-Run your cost of doing business. To be profitable (not a billionaire, I’m talking even enough just to put food on your table!) you need to run your cost of doing business and account for all of the expenses you have to run your business, and really sit down and figure that out. Don’t just make up a number when pricing your services or products because it seems like everyone else’s services or products are at said price. Focus on YOUR journey and what YOU can do to make your business successful. Find people, like other business owners that are super successful and pick their brain, learn from them.

What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?
I would say my biggest area of improvement personally is time management. I have worked on putting a better balance between work and home/family life and I think that has helped a lot with making me less stressed out and happier in both aspects.
