Meet Kristin Snyder

We were lucky to catch up with Kristin Snyder recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Kristin, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?

This is a question on everyone’s mind as a human. When we have setbacks, challenges, and changes in what we believe to be true, we might find ourselves asking the purpose of all of this. Why were we put on this earth? Why is there so much destruction? Why is there so much hate? We might believe we need to do something extremely great and make history. But the truth is, it’s the smallest acts we make that serve the greatest purpose. One tiny interaction with a random stranger can change their trajectory in life. I won’t say I’ve found my ultimate purpose, but I do believe my purpose is to grow and change everyday within myself. By doing so, I know I serve a greater purpose to those around me in the past, present, and future.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

Among the Rubble is a volunteer organization composed of several different individuals and organizations that serve the people of the Gaza strip in Palestine. It was founded by a Palestinian American woman whose family came here due to the violent Israeli occupation of Palestine. We decided working together as a team was better than working alone and, after nearly 1.5 years, we have accomplished many things we couldn’t have done alone.

The name, Among the Rubble, was the idea of our first volunteer whom we worked with on the ground in Gaza. They all lived and worked among the destroyed homes and infrastructure in Gaza, but we were also with them virtually and spiritually. We are all among the rubble in Gaza, weaving and mending the souls of each other through our work.

As a Board Member and founding member of the group, I wear many hats. In fact, we all serve many purposes. Currently, I am in charge of recruiting volunteers overseas and sometimes on the ground depending on the project. I manage the account for our current project called ‘Do GOOD in Gaza,’ as well as participate in fundraising activities. As Director of Operations, I also do my best to streamline our activities to make work easier for others. This has proven difficult due to the constant changes of the situation. Every day is something new.

Our newest project will be a mental health project. We plan to create small community building hubs to further enforce the resilience of the people in Palestine and around the world. We hope it will better serve the current medical infrastructure in a creative way. We will also hopefully be working more with children in this area, as well as with a Pediatric Physical Therapist to help children injured from bombings and shootings. The aim is to provide free care for children whose family cannot afford it.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

I have learned a variety of different skills over my career, but I don’t think there is one specific hard skill that would benefit anyone better than any other. It’s the soft skills like working as a team, adaptability, and empathy that get you where you need to go. Being able to actually imagine yourself in someone’s shoes, or even just taking the time to listen and believe someone, is something that is lacking in the workplace and society in general. My best advice is to look deep within yourself and realize that life isn’t about waking up and going to work. It’s about your community, the planet, and the future of society. You might not live the most lavish life, but your heart will be rich.

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?

Yes! We absolutely need volunteers. No matter your background, we can find something for you to do. All we require is an open heart and a willingness to show up every day no matter what. You can email me or connect with me on Instagram or Facebook.
