We recently connected with Kristina Esposito and have shared our conversation below.
Kristina, so happy to have you with us today. You are such a creative person, but have you ever head any sort of creativity block along the way? If so, can you talk to us about how you overcame or beat it?
I have found when I hit a creative block there are usually two things that help. The first is to take a bit of a break. Go for a walk, watch a TV show that inspires me (right now I’m rewatching the Sopranos and its suprisingly helpful). Basically anything to get my mind off of what I need to do. Then when I return I’ll often feel rejuvenated and inspired to start writing (or complete whatever task I’m avoiding). If that still doesn’t work, I’ll try a free writing exercise. I’ll either take an element of whatever I’m writing, or do some research and take a line and write for 3-5 minutes about that topic. Sometimes its completely unusable, but the exercise will usually unlock something that will allow me to continue. The key is to keep writing for the allotted time.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am a creative producer with my company KEME Productions. We produce shorts, webseries and feature films that have screened at numerous festivals all over the world. I think the best part about my work is collaborating with others. Helping bring people’s vision to fruition and seeing in on the big screen. I also really look for projects that tell universal stories, in a new light.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I think three elements that have really helped my journey are the ability to listen, the ability to problem solve, and finding people you enjoy working with. In producing you have a number of different elements that all have to come together, the budget and the creative being the most important. Often times (especially in indie film) these are the most as odds. Finding a comprise within the limits and not losing the creative integrity is very important. Listening, then collaborating with your team is the most important element to success.
The ability to problem solve is something, often on set, that comes very handy. This comes with experience, but in the beginning the ability to be on your toes and roll with what’s happening is a huge help when dealing with the issues on set. That and being able to stay calm when things go wrong (because no matter what- things will go wrong).
Lastly the people you work with is so important. Filmmaking is a very collaborative endeavour. Make sure you are on the same page as the people you are working with and your goals, as well as style of working, on aligned. Before committing to a project or hiring someone, ask about how they like to work, what their style is and preferred forms of communication. This allows you to understand their expectations and see if they line up with yours.
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
Take a deep breath. It seems so simple, yet in the moment so hard. When I’m feeling very overwhelmed I like to stop what I’m doing, take a deep breath, then try to break everything down. To do lists are my favourite thing and checking them off is so satisfying!
I’ll often write out everything I have to do, then try to knock off the easiest tasks first. If there’s a major deadline on one of them, I’ll try to do something, anything to get it going first. Sometimes its as simple as point form writing answers or notes on the topic. It may be completely incoherent, but doing this then leaving it for a day, then coming back to it helps you feel like your not starting from a blank page. It makes the task seem more manageable.
I also have a few friends/ family members that I will talk through my issues. They don’t need any knowledge about the topics or issue, but often just hearing it out loud helps me relax and often solve the issue myself.
