We were lucky to catch up with Kristina Palmer recently and have shared our conversation below.
Palmer, so great to be with you and I think a lot of folks are going to benefit from hearing your story and lessons and wisdom. Imposter Syndrome is something that we know how words to describe, but it’s something that has held people back forever and so we’re really interested to hear about your story and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
I’m not sure if there is really a way to overcome impostor syndrome, I more so have learned to manage it. These days it’s almost impossible not to be bombarded with images and stories of people who you may perceive to have more talent than you or you perceive are doing what you do better. I would say one of the biggest things that helps me is to be confident and project confidence (even if I’m not feeling my best in that moment). I’m not above a as good mirror pep talk to remind myself “you can do this.” I also like to remind myself that someone else’s success does not take away from my own talent. There are many factors that can lead to success or perceived fast success, so it does nothing positive for me to constantly compare myself or my success to others. I just stay focused on my goals and remember that my pesky imposter syndrome must be wrong because I can and I am doing this.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
When I started working for myself, it started with my vintage store and expanded from there. I began helping with styling for homes and businesses and soon began getting requests for murals. I paint interior and exterior geometric and abstract murals in homes and businesses. I am currently focusing more on the murals and growing that business.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I think being honest, kind, and never being afraid to make a change or take a chance are important qualities in achieving success. Others may feel differently but I view honesty and kindness as important traits that often get lost in the business world. When giving any type of advice I always strive to be as transparent and honest as possible. So if someone says something like “it must be awesome to be doing this for a living” I always start by saying “of course, yes it is, but like anything there are positives and negatives that come with it.” My advice for folks who are early in their journey is to be prepared for ups and downs and know that even if you need to make changes that doesn’t mean you’re doing anything wrong, it just means you are learning how to carve your own path.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
Yes, I am always looking for new ways to expand my business and would love to work on any project that fits within what I am currently doing. If you are looking to collab and feel like we would be a good fit, please message me on instagram @paintingpalmer.
