We were lucky to catch up with Kristine Kimmel & Danielle Koenig recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kristine Kimmel and Danielle, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
We knew we had a unique chemistry, so hosting a comedy podcast, How to Survive with Danielle & Kristine, was an obvious choice. Individually, our purposes have been to make people laugh, whether through performing or writing, and collectively, our aim remains the same. Additionally, our goal as podcast hosts is to inform our audience in a funny and entertaining way.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
We both come from writing backgrounds. We met as writers on “The Dish,” a sister show to “The Soup.” We got to know each other’s sense of humor and personalities and became fast friends. A few years later, over dinner (and perhaps a drink or two), we realized our talents and friendship would make for an excellent podcast.
We love to make each other laugh, and our goal was to create a comedy podcast that we’d have fun doing every week. How to Survive with Danielle & Kristine primarily exists to entertain. Along the way, if the audience learns some facts, that’s great too! We’ve had listeners tell us, “I was in this horrible situation, but I made a conscious decision to Remain Calm,” This is our show’s motto. Aside from the life-saving information provided, we feature our favorite people from television, film, and stand-up who share funny/horrifying/humiliating things they’ve survived. We also recently launched a Patreon to give our listeners bonus episodes and fun extras like videos!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The three most important qualities to making How to Survive are our comedy chops, friendship, and ability to learn as we go. Our audience tells us they respond to our humor and our natural chemistry. And we’ve had to learn all the tricks of the trade to deal with the behind-the-scenes stuff like promotion and merchandise. It also helps that we collectively know many funny people who have appeared on the show as guests.
Looking back over the past 12 months or so, what do you think has been your biggest area of improvement or growth?
Launching our Patreon was exciting for How to Survive with Danielle & Kristine. Patreon allowed us a new way to connect with our listeners and provide the extra content our listeners had asked for, like longer and Bonus episodes. Patreon has strengthened our show, and we can’t wait to see where this collaboration takes us next! We recently celebrated our 100th episode with a live performance, and we were able to offer the video to our listeners on Patreon.
