Meet Kristy Hyde

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kristy Hyde. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kristy below.

Kristy, thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?

I keep my creativity alive by continuing my education every chance I’m afforded. A wise man once told me, “Never stop learning, the day you stop learning is the day you stop growing”

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

My name is Kristy Hyde, I’ve been a licensed cosmetologist for 20 years specializing in natural curly hair based in Greenville, South Carolina. In 2013 I took the faith jump and opened my own salon as it was hard to find a salon home , I created my own culture where all walks of life are embraced and welcomed. I restructured my entire business in 2019 to focus on creating the change I wished to see in the hair industry to shift the narrative in Greenville, where hair image often prioritizes appearance over comfort with natural curls and textures, particularly in corporate America.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

I can say that my passion and love for doing hair have had the greatest impact. No one ever has to encourage me to show up to do someone’s hair. I genuinely love being part of the moment when someone sees themselves in the mirror and smiles. Loving what you do makes it easier to learn and grow. Continuing my education helps improve my skills along with the mindset it’s always room to improve me.

Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?

I’ve discovered that resting is the best remedy when I’m overwhelmed. Recognizing when my energy is depleting, I know that taking a moment to breathe and rest is essential for recharging. I’m very intentional about being present for both my family and my clients; if I’m burned out, I can’t be the best version of myself. To maintain this balance, I set healthy boundaries and avoid overextending myself. I’ve learned the importance of saying no more often than yes.
