We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Krystal Bey. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Krystal below.
Krystal, so great to have you with us and thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts with the community. So, let’s jump into something that stops so many people from going after their dreams – haters, nay-sayers, etc. We’d love to hear about how you dealt with that and persisted on your path.
Like most people, I’ve encountered my fair share of persons in and around my life that have cast doubt, disdain, or even disappointment over my life choices. It’s always comments like “you’re too x”, or “you’re not y ENOUGH”, or “you can’t do z” and the list goes on. But I’ve had to realize that those comments are not in fact a reflection of me or even necessarily how nay-sayers see me. Those discouraging remarks are moreso a reflection of how those people see themselves. Once I came to grips with that, persisting despite the nay-sayers became remarkably easy! At first, my approach was to try and prove these people wrong, but they don’t deserve that level of influence nor do they even recognize when you DO prove them wrong half of the time. So it’s a futile effort. The best way forward is to advance from a place of deep-seated confidence and identity, knowing that you’re doing what you’ve been called to do and pursuing your purpose unapologetically.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am an actress, model, writer, visual artist, content creator, and entrepreneur! Being an artist is just something that comes incredibly naturally to me. From as far back as I can remember, I was always singing a song, taking a picture, drawing, painting, dancing, creating, you name it. Over the years, that’s just kind of morphed into my full-time career, which is an amazing blessing. At present, I am placing a lot of focus on the writing, content, and visual arts aspects of my career. This entails pouring more time and effort into my YouTube channel, writing and editing my forthcoming books, and gearing up for the site launch for my LLC, Bey Creative, which will sell some of my original art prints. As an actress and model, I have seen amazing success in the commercial space and have done video and print work for nationally recognized brands like Whimzees, Footlocker, Darling Hair, and more! I am incredibly excited to release my own products and to continue working in conjunction with established brands as I grow as an artist.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Three areas of knowledge that were most impactful in my artistic journey are as follows:
1. Place God First
I’ve known what I’ve wanted to do in life for a very long time. Probably since I was about 5 or 6. And with that, I pursued it relentlessly and placed all of my effort into honing my God-given gifts and talents. With all that I was doing however, I noticed that I’d have successes and then hit this invisible wall. It wasn’t until the beginning of the pandemic when I was graduating college, newly married, and growing considerably in my relationship with Christ, that I realized that as much as I trusted God and called myself a Christian, I hadn’t been placing Him first in certain areas of my life where I thought that I had things “figured out.” As I began to surrender my artistic career to His will, I began to see it flourish.
2. Establish a Trusted Team
Doing everything yourself is exhausting and unsustainable. Gather a team who you trust with your vision and who you trust to help you with certain aspects of your work.
3. Go With Your Gut
Your intuition is your most reliable asset. If something feels off, it’s okay to say no. Not every opportunity is a good opportunity, and not every “good” opportunity is a GOD opportunity.
Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
The absolute number one challenge I’m currently facing is striking the most proper, most effective balance between motherhood and career, especially now that my daughter is fast approaching those terrific twos. And as our family expands I can only imagine all the different directions in which I’ll be pulled and how much more meticulously I’ll have to steward my time. As a resolve to this challenge, I am trying with all my might to stay. on. schedule! Haha. It’s tough, but I’m constantly reminding myself that other women and mothers have gone before me and somehow made it happen. So I cling to that and the reality that God is in control and whatever will be will be in its timing so that I don’t insist on forcing things, for example, in seasons where I’m being called to slow down some and be present with my family.
