Meet Krystal Edman-wilson

We recently connected with Krystal Edman-wilson and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Krystal, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?

I grew up in a very small gold rush town in Northern California. Jobs were waitressing, housekeeping or manual labor. When I was a kid, being different was frowned upon, and being a bigger girl in the early 2000’s was even more so. When I turned 18, I moved to Napa Valley, and started getting tattoos as a way to help me feel more physically confident, and now I’m covered! For me, helping clients get their makeup done and feel absolutely beautiful is the best feeling in the world, helping them realize their inner confidence and self worth, whatever age they are. We all deserve to feel beautiful and worthy of ourselves and our bodies.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

Sleepless nights working two jobs and going to school full time, crying in my car because of stress, building my website and clientele from the ground up, and I think I can say successfully that I have finally carved a niche as both a celebrated stylist and a special effects (SFX) expert.

Based in Las Vegas, I have spent two and a half years working to perfect my makeup craft and be the best possible artist for my clients, backed by a perfect academic record from the renowned L Makeup Institute.

From creating iconic Halloween looks for Duran Duran’s sold-out show at Madison Square Garden to styling hair in Cancun for high-profile clients, I have become a trusted, reliable artist for every occasion. My versatile portfolio spans movie sets, modeling agencies, bridal beauty, and intricate SFX makeup, including the spine-chilling work showcased in The Devil’s Door, a horror film now streaming on Tubi.

I have a calm bubbly demeanor and a unique personality that bring clients of every caliber to me and I make every individual feel like they are worth a million dollars.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

1. Being friendly/kind. It can make or break you as a HMUA, and it can open doors to new opportunities. I’ve had many photographers and models I’ve worked with as well as fellow artists that have recommended me for jobs or brought me onto really cool gigs just because they liked my energy and work ethic.
2. Always looking to improve your craft. I’m constantly asking for advice or watching videos on how to better my makeup artistry and hairstyling skills. Don’t be afraid to do unpaid collabs with fellow photographers you trust, because you can get your work noticed with professional top quality photos and get you noticed.
3. A website goes a long way to making you look more professional! Also joining groups on Facebook for brides searching for makeup artists, vendor websites, getting your foot in the door at local casinos with wedding chapels so they can recommend you as well!

Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?

My mother! She has been my rock throughout the last three years of struggling and overcoming obstacles. She’s the one that found L Makeup Institute and pushed me to take a chance and attend. She was there for me when I went through a really hard break up, and a death in the family, and I couldn’t take time away from work and had to still show up for my clients and put on a brave face. I’m forever grateful for her for always being in my corner and rooting for me.
