We were lucky to catch up with Krystal Martin recently and have shared our conversation below.
Krystal , so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?
Being the only Black person in the room can be intimidating, but I’ve learned to make it work to my advantage.
I think one of the most important things for me to remember is that I am not defined by my skin color. I am a human being, and as such, I bring a unique perspective to every interaction and situation.
I believe that being your true self is what attracts people to you—regardless of whether or not you look like them! So when I’m in a room with people who look very different from me, I try to do the same thing: be authentic and genuine.
The best thing about being an African American woman in America is that we have so much beauty and diversity within our community; our differences don’t divide us—they unite us!
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I’m a small business owner of the K&K Co. Bath & Home Collection, and I make handcrafted vegan skincare and candles.
I started my brand because I wanted to create products that were plant-powered and unique to the market space, but also affordable enough that anyone could afford them. I love the idea of being able to support independent businesses like mine, as well as giving back to the environment through recycling and sustainable packaging.
I’m really excited about the fall collection because it includes scents like: White Tea + Ginger, Almond Milk + Honey, Lavender + Milk, Rose Water. These scents can be found in our new line up of fall scented candles as well as in a new line of body care products! We’ve also just added “candle making workshops” and “soap making workshops” as an additional product offering—perfect for private or corporate events!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I think the three most impactful qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that helped me in my journey are:
I have always been a person who is driven by the desire to create a beautiful home and life. I love making sure that everything is placed nicely, organized and most importantly smells good. When I was growing up, I always loved decorating and smells of my mom body lotions and soaps. It was important to me to make sure that it was created using clean and toxin free ingredients for my product line. This has helped me in my journey as a product based business owner because it has allowed me to create an environment where people can come and relax, with out worrying if their products contained toxins.
I also am very good at networking with people. I love getting out there and meeting new people. This has helped me become successful because it allows me to build relationships with people who are interested in what we do at K&K Co. Bath & Home Collection.
Another skill that has helped me throughout my journey is being persistent despite how I feel or what challenges come my way. We started this business from nothing, so there were many times when we didn’t have enough money or supplies, but we still kept going because we knew it would work out eventually if we kept trying hard enough!
So my advice would be to dig deep and find out what truly inspires you to create and while creating build a team or a network of people who want to see you win and will be there for you in the times you fail. Nothing comes over night, it takes time, consistency, and dedication.
Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
K&K Co. Bath & Home Collection has been most successful because of its business coaches at MOWBC, located in Columbia, Missouri. These coaches have helped K&K Co. develop the essential skills, qualities, and knowledge needed to run a profitable business.
The most important thing that has contributed to the success of K&K Co. has been my husband’s trust and belief in my dreams, as well as his support in me taking the steps to make them a reality. The second most important asset that has contributed to our success is my family’s supportive words and encouragement.
