Meet Krystal Munday

We were lucky to catch up with Krystal Munday recently and have shared our conversation below.

Krystal, so great to be with you and I think a lot of folks are going to benefit from hearing your story and lessons and wisdom. Imposter Syndrome is something that we know how words to describe, but it’s something that has held people back forever and so we’re really interested to hear about your story and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
I overcome imposter syndrome by recognizing that I am in control of my own success. Rather than attributing my accomplishments to luck or chance, I take ownership and responsibility for the hard work and dedication that goes into each piece of jewelry I create. To stay motivated, I reflect on every success and appreciate even small successes like mastering a new silversmith technique or finishing a complex design. When I’m faced with moments of doubt, I remind myself of all the skills and knowledge that I have gained over time that make me an adept jewelry artist. Additionally, I draw inspiration from other creatives who have achieved their goals and use that as a source of motivation to keep pushing forward with my craft. Ultimately, resilience and determination are key when it comes to overcoming imposter syndrome, so no matter how many times self-doubt arises, I focus on staying positive and creating beautiful pieces of handmade jewelry.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
Silver Borders uses traditional silversmith techniques to create handmade jewelry that brings joy and happiness to the wearer. With intricate detail and unique designs that showcase the natural beauty of sterling silver, each piece is carefully crafted with care. I am self-taught in this craft and committed to perfecting my artistry through practice, experimentation, and dedication. I strive to create unique and inspiring pieces that showcase my artistic traits. I focus on creating intricate sterling silver jewelry pieces that are one of a kind and reflect the distinct beauty of each individual. My passion for the craft lies in the creative process as well as the opportunity to grow personally with each design. I believe that my jewelry can be used to bring happiness and creativity into people’s lives. That’s why I strive to make sure that my jewelry is approachable and accessible to all types of viewers.

This year, I am expanding my online presence to reach a wider audience while also attending many art shows throughout the Pacific Northwest to share my work with more people. Through regular website and social updates, viewers can keep up with new creations, my upcoming art shows and learn more about my story and motivations behind each design.

As a way of giving back, I created a YouTube channel where anyone can gain knowledge about silversmithing techniques and tips from me. Through these tutorials, I hope to inspire others to explore the world of silversmithing and find ways for them to express themselves through creative outlets. If I can bring the happiness to one person that silversmithing has brought to me then I feel this is all worth it.

I’m also delighted to share that over the past few months I’ve been working on a new collection called “Awaiting the Sunshine”. It’s a cheerful collection full of delicate half-moon shapes symbolizing emerging sunshine after a dreary rainy season in Pacific Northwest. I chose sterling silver as the medium for this collection with subtle details emulating rays of sunshine reflecting off raindrops. To enhance the brightness even more, I hand-set precious gems into some of my creations, bringing an extra sparkle and charm. This collection was released on March 10th, 2023 on my website.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back, I believe that three of the most impactful qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge in my journey is time blocking, organization, and discipline. Time blocking involves the practice of allocating specific amounts of time to certain tasks. This helped me to ensure that I was making progress on important tasks without getting bogged down on non-essential details. It also ensured that I had time allocated for activities such as relaxation or leisure as well. Organization has also played a role in ensuring that I could keep track of all the different moving parts involved in my work. To be successful at this, I needed to be able to organize my materials and resources so they could easily be accessed when I needed them. Lastly, discipline is key because it allowed me to stay on track with my goals and objectives no matter what distractions arose. This required me to set up routines and habits that helped me maintain focus and dedication when things got difficult or overwhelming.

My advice for those who are looking to develop or improve upon these qualities is to start by focusing on one area first. For example, begin by establishing a solid routine for yourself by setting aside specific times for completing various tasks throughout the day. Once you have a good foundation established then you can move onto refining other areas such as organization and discipline. With organization this includes creating as system that works for you. As far as discipline goes, start small by setting achievable goals each day rather than trying to tackle too many all at once; this will help build momentum over time and create habits that are hardwired into your daily routine, so they become second nature over time.

Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
The book that has played the most important role in my development is “The Untethered Soul” by Michael A. Singer. This book was given to me by my friend Sarah, and I’m so grateful for her wisdom because it really changed my life. This book helped me realize that I was allowing my thoughts and emotions to cloud my judgment and create unnecessary stress in my life.

First, this book taught me was that I can separate myself from my thoughts and emotions. By doing so, I can view them objectively without getting caught up in them, allowing me to make decisions based on facts rather than feeling overwhelmed with negative emotion. It also showed me how to be an observer of my own mind, taking note of when I get caught up in unhelpful thinking patterns and how to break free from them.

Another key lesson this book taught me is that true peace comes from letting go of attachment to outcomes and instead surrendering ourselves to the present moment. This was a powerful reminder that worrying about what’s going to happen tomorrow doesn’t do anything productive; it only serves to increase stress levels unnecessarily. The author teaches us how to observe our experiences without judging or attaching ourselves to them, allowing us to remain calm throughout difficult or uncertain periods of time.

Overall, this book has provided me with invaluable tools for managing stress and increasing awareness of my own thought processes. It has made a huge difference in how I approach life, helping me focus more on what is within my control while being mindful of the things beyond it.
