Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Krystell Pujol. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Krystell, so happy to have you on the platform and I think our readers are in for a treat because you’ve got such an interesting story and so much insight and wisdom. So, let’s start with a topic that is relevant to everyone, regardless of industry etc. What do you do for self-care and how has it impacted you?
Even though it is hard to take time from my day-to-day, I try to give it at least an hour to do something for myself.
What self-care looks like for me is taking time for running; riding my bikes; practicing yoga; playing tennis; putting my headphones on and listen to music while I have a long walk; reading a few pages from my book not related to work; journaling; meditating; having a slow morning and just sitting for some minutes to enjoy my coffee; having a glass of wine while I have a face mask on; going out for a good dinner at a restaurant either by myself or with friends; taking a pause from work on weekends and taking at least part of a day to rest and watch TV.
It has become essential to shut off my brain from work at least for the weekends and some part of my every day. It is a way to refresh myself or a boost of energy to go through the day or start a new week.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
First of all, I must share that I am Mexican, and I live in the border region. Mexico is mainly an exporting country and, as such, there is a need for lawyers focused on the Foreign Trade and Customs area.
When I was in school, out of the four years, only one class (which lasted six months) was about this type of law. For me, this means most of the lawyers practicing Foreign Trade and Customs Law have learned when practicing it themselves. This is exactly how I learned and started practicing this area. It was time for me to do an internship and I chose a Law Firm that supposedly practiced International Criminal Law, according to the catalog at my school, and it ended up being a Foreign Trade and Customs Law Firm. I have tried practicing other types of law, but it does not generate the passion, drive, and interest this area gives me. So, I would say my job chose me.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The area of law I practice, compared to other types of law, is dynamic. Foreign trade changes, so the law applicable to it is constantly altered. Every year, the Foreign Trade and Customs Law is changed or amended, but we have seen changes from one month to another that completely modify the essence of the rules or articles.
Therefore, my first advice would be to stay updated every day and have a group of peers to discuss with whatever modification is made since, most of the time, neither the authorities nor the government understand the adjustments made and their implications.
The second advice would be to not learn things by memorizing, but by developing the skill of knowing where to look for the information. The number of legal documents applicable to this type of law is endless.
The third one would be to set your limits. Not everything is in your control. The day only has 24 hours, and one shouldn’t spend most of the day working. As an employee and as an employer, this has been my main issue. Never lose yourself in or for the job.
Do you think it’s better to go all in on our strengths or to try to be more well-rounded by investing effort on improving areas you aren’t as strong in?
I think it is important to understand all the aspects of the business you have, but also acknowledge that we do not have to be experts at everything.
My area of law is closely related to managing a system that is very technical and has to fulfill the requirements of the authority for the control of inventories regarding the goods companies import and/or export, and never-ending spreadsheets. The amount of time I have spent revising it is enormous compared to the total amount it takes for my partner who has a Foreign Trade Degree.
Letting go of control is one of my main challenges, but I have come to learn teamwork is essential for a successful business. Knowing the strengths of each member of a team and good communication aids in providing a better service and being able to have more clients since the steps of a project are based on the skills of each person involved, which means efficiency.
