Meet Kuri

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kuri a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Kuri, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?

Confidence was definitely not something I always had. When I was younger I was in a constant environment of comparison and judgement, but once I got older I knew how to separate others’ opinions from my truth. Learning that being myself and being unique is one of the biggest blessings one can have.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

My name is Kuri and art has always been an escape for me. Growing up in Phoenix, Arizona has been nothing short of beautiful chaos. Whether it was violence inside of my house, or out in my neighborhood, I could always draw and use my creativity to keep me hopeful towards a better life someday.
That same freedom is what I aspire to reflect through my artwork. Drawing was the start, but now I’m looking towards other mediums such as clothing and paintings with all of my original designs.

The brand name itself, however, is derivative of the yugioh card the Kuriboh. I chose this because it is the weakest of all the cards, but its strength is in how it is used. I suppose I’ve always felt like an underdog, being that my resilience leads to some surprised responses haha. Although I sell my designs, I want the art itself to be on the forefront more so than the business aspect. I released a sample drop back in 2023, and plan to do another spring of 2026 showcasing bold new designs and variety of apparel.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Three qualities I can say impacted me most would be patience, persistence, and love. Patience of course because all things happen on God’s timing and at the time it was meant to. Persistence goes hand in hand with that as effort is mandatory to push forward. The seed must be planted and nourished for it to grow over time. I say love because it is one of the most important things to me. I want my actions and work to be done in a way that leaves people with a better temperament than before they came across it, and hopefully to inspire them to do the same. My advice to anyone would be to find yourself because to love yourself it to know yourself. Don’t let anyone or anything take that away from you. Everything else will fall into place after that.

Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?

The autobiography of Malcolm X by far is one of the most important books I’ve read. It displays the evils, and goods of the world as well as vulnerability. I believe everyone should read this as it gives a lesson on how perception creates one’s reality.
