Meet Kurriizma (hector Diaz)

We were lucky to catch up with Kurriizma (hector Diaz) recently and have shared our conversation below.

Kurriizma , so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?

I found my purpose in the most dire of circumstances. In 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, I had to endure more pain and loss than I had ever in my entire life. During that time, I had to create an entire collection for my senior year of collage. I had been laid off, lost my home, and was in a massive pandemic that caused a lot of troubling times and a world that was left uncertain. I had to believe in my abilities and work with what was around me. That’s how I founded Kurriizmatic. I saw the need to use the things around me, and through that idea and sheer force of will, I was able to create my entire senior collection using only the clothes that were around me to make my own fabric plus materials. This would be the beginning of my brand Kurriizmatic and set into course the core message of our brand, being that we only use pre-existing clothes, fabrics, and materials to make new clothes.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

My brand Kurriizmatic focuses on creating bespoke 1 of 1 pieces using only 2nd hand materials such as clothing, fabric scraps, curtains, fibers, etc. through a process we call: “Dreamweaving”. I have been designing and making clothes since I was 13 years old. My grandmother owned a tailor factory in New York’s garment district and at a young age I was introduced to the art of making clothing. Since we came from humble begins, I always asked my grandmother to take some of my old clothes apart and swap the sleeves or collars out of them in order to create new pieces for my outfits. To me their is nothing more exciting than creating and designing new pieces and outfits. I believe Fashion to be the highest form of self expression and a psychological projection of our psyches to the real world. My brand is young being only 3 years old this year, but we have pulled off major achievements in our short time.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

These are three qualities that I have instilled into myself over the course of my journey:

Disciplined – I have always been true to my beliefs and I no matter what, I will never cut corners or choose to disavow what I believe in. No matter the circumstances, my discipline allows me to persevere through the hardest circumstances.

Dreaming – This is what allows my creativity to be at its maximum. I have always been a dreamer, I can remember 95% of all my dreams in full detail. I constantly think of the most wildest and crazy ideas when it comes to my desgin work and attempt to “Dreamweave” them into reality. You can never stop dreaming in my eyes.

Manifesting – “We are what we think. All that we are arises with our thoughts. With our thoughts we make the world.” I believe to achieve greatness, you must always strive to manifest what you want to achieve into reality. The world is a canvas and the painter is you.

All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?

I would say the one obstacle that I’m currently facing has been the need to expand but the lack of proper funding to do so. It’s something that I believe is necessary in order to truly see my vision of creating a “circular-fashion” industry into reality. I have been constantly refining my business plans and pitches, applying for various grants, and still making pieces to sell in order to fund my Dreams. Money is always going to be an issue, but money isn’t going to be the thing that stops me from fulfilling my goals and dreams in life. No matter what, I hope to inspire, teach, and learn as I am just one person doing what company’s spend billions trying to figure out. I hope who ever is taking the time to read this understands the plight of the average person in this day an age and considers the nuance that Designers must have in order to succeed in todays day and age.
