Meet Kurston Ghumm

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kurston Ghumm. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kurston below.

Kurston , looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
My parents, for sure! Both have always been in management, both are so respected in the workplace, and both have the mindset of getting business done first. It has definitely had an impact on my brothers and I when it comes to us and working. I do not like to leave tasks undone, and challenge myself to complete tasks faster and more efficiently every time.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I do nails! I do nails, but I’ve learned I do more than, just nails. I increase self-esteem, I inform clients about nail care, I bring-to-life client ideas. I help busy clients relax while they’re with me, I give clients a safe place to be. I don’t just do nails even though that’s my first line I shout out!

I want everyone from all walks of this Earth to feel like they belong. And if they don’t feel this way out in the world, I want them to with me. Absolutely no judgment, and I want to see the real them. They see the real me in return!

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Basic book keeping or accounting is an area of knowledge that impacts any self employed person. As fun as your career may be, it has to make you a living. A person needs to understand how to keep track of money coming in as well as money going out. Don’t go into self employment blind to the basics of accounting and inventory management. Make sure you know, or know someone who can teach you the basics.

As far as the nail field. Knowing the market in your area. You need to know what the clients in your area like. What the trends are and what types of enhancements people are looking for. Then study those enhancements. I don’t really think a person needs to provide every single enhancement, because that would run you dry. But you can get a feel for what your community likes to wear if you do some research.

A must have skill, I believe, is an open mind. Like most things, nail trends are forever changing. Be open to trying new things, be open to learning new skills, and be open to listening to your clients.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I would love to get connected with some nail techs in the area. I’d love to meet some techs and possibly offer classes. I’d love to get with some techs to learn and share techniques and have a place to possibly display art. I’ve created colors of gel and powders and that would be fun to get into. I’d love to get more exposure in the world and be recognized. Ive only skimmed the surface of the industry and I’ve done it alone. I’d love to just be around people with as much passion as I do and see where we can go with it.
