We recently connected with Kwesi Guppy and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kwesi, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
It came after I’ve experienced the toughest years of my life. I temporarily quit music in 2014 and moved back into Trinidad, and after some talk with my best friends, self reflecting and rebuilding my resolve, I’ve been back at it since and never slowed down since.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Born and raised in Trinidad & Tobago, Kwesi Guppy always had an ear for music. He originally wanted to be a poet but after spending afternoons watching Rap City, he chose his path as a musician and never looked back. Cammy-Kun is a hip hop artist who blends a little bit of every other genre, who’s subject matter is relatable to misfits like himself or the people who fits the subject he chooses. His name is based on a script for a manga he is currently working on.
After spending years of developing his craft, he moved to Brooklyn in order to further his career as an artist and released multiple songs & an EP series called Limited Options . His first Breakthrough was in 2020 when he released his song Bills which went viral on spotify, as it was not only supported by his fans but was also pushed by the editors of Spotify.
In 2024 to make up for the delay of Limited Options 3, Cam dropped, “In Your Eyes I’m The Villain EP” Which gained Half a million streams within the first week of its release featuring rappers like Rick Ross & KXNG Crooked. After the release Cam went on his second tour, Opening for rappers like E-Los & Mark Battles. Limited Options 3 Will be released in 2025! His mission is to create hope through his music while growing as an artist, stay tuned
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The three qualities that were able impacted me the most is, Reflection, Adaptation & Artist Development. For anyone that wants to do music, please believe me when I say that if you don’t do these 3 things, it will make your music journey extremely difficult. First you gotta be able to Reflect on everything that is going on good or bad in your life, so you can heal and move forward else you will be conquered by your own mind and traumas, preventing you from making music at your fullest potential. I couldn’t tell you how many songs, sessions, meetup opportunities I’ve missed because my mental health was in shambles.Secondly be able to adapt, the music industry is constantly changing, I’ve seen music strategies went from uploading to youtube, to going on Datpiff, to making music videos and now short form content from TikTok & Reels, you gotta be open to get with the times or else your music will not get heard. And finally get Artist Development, I’ve seen too many artist chasing fame but the music they make aren’t up to standards and gets frustrated when it do, I wish I prioritized artist development sooner but had a more slower route, normally if you join an artist development program, you can be ready in 6 months it took me over 7 years to get good because I didn’t know how to develop but made slow strides along the way, in fact, my self awareness was present to the point I never thought my music was good until 2020.
To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
My mom is the reason why I’m a music artist today. In Trinidad, I was doing a computer course and almost dropped out because I was being severely bullied by the students, teachers & principal. I called my mom while I was in the bathroom and I was bawling my eyes out, telling her I never want to be here again. She encouraged me to finish it and I did graduate. When I moved to the US, I was wondering if to do music or computers and my mom, remembering what my experience was, told me to go to music school. I haven’t looked back since.
