Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kyanne Bismarck. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Kyanne, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?
After two plus decades in the hairdressing industry, I am always asked about how to work on confidence through working with my clients or mentoring other hairdressers and small business owners.
As a young hairdresser the industry was not flooded with social media step by steps and other professionals sharing their knowledge. Hair did not come naturally to me but the care for my client and the drive to know I wanted to gain more knowledge put me in rooms where I was awe struck by what apprenticeships and trade colleges were lacking.
Never saying no to an opportunity to learn from someone has definitely helped to shape my career and grow my networks that now I am so blessed to call some of the top achievers in my industry from all around the world a friend!
I looked to the top salons in Australia and overseas to inspire me and I spent time and money investing in attending seminars and workshops to work on precision, This lead to some amazing opportunities to share Stages and rooms with Internatonally recognised Brands and Industry Leaders.
I’ve witnessed firsthand how developing new skills and perfecting my trade is crucial for success: which in turn helps with self esteem and confidence. This has now lead to being invited as a Guest Artist for Seminars, Training Salons in the Science and Technical side of Colouring, helping to launch new products and Brands into Australia, becoming an Ambassador for Brands and being able to work in Film and TV while building a Celebrity/Influencer clientele.
Throughout my journey, I found invaluable mentors who guided me through challenges and encouraged me to embrace my own unique style. Upskilling through advanced courses and attending seminars not only honed my technical abilities but also broadened my perspective, allowing me the opportunity to pass on my knowledge to other passionate professionals.
This continuous learning has empowered me to step out of my comfort zone, leading to a deeper sense of self-worth and has given me the inspiration to share with others in their own journeys. Ultimately, confidence in our craft translates into the quality of service we provide, transforming both our careers and the lives of our clients.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I have my own salon where I work on the floor with staff that I train plus I mentor salons and some small businesses with coaching them and running tehchnique training and I also have partnered up to have a small local networking group of business owners. Running a business can be lonely and knowing that there are other people out there that are going through what you are gives you the confidence to keep on the track to success.
I love my industry and the passion for creating confidence in each client I see helps to continue my growth so I don’t become stagnant.
I also am a Wife and a Mother of a 5 Year old! I like to keep busy!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I was always a perfectionist so that pushed me to learn how to grow my skills. I learned very early that listening to your client is so important and setting their expectations for what is realistic for them. This helped me to search to gain more knowledge on consultation and also perfecting the way I gain the knowledge I need to build the relationship with them early. There is a lot of psychology and science behind hairdressing; the faster you acknowledge that the easier everything else becomes. Plus passion is such an important element to hairdressing; you can be the best skill wise but if you lack in care and passion for what you do people can tell!
Never stop learning! Whether its online videos, hands on seminars or finding a Mentor/Coach there is always something new or an easier (more profitable) way to do things!
And never say no to an opportunity; you never know what can come of it!
What would you advise – going all in on your strengths or investing on areas where you aren’t as strong to be more well-rounded?
As I’m leaning into the next chapter of my career I am looking at specialising in the areas that I really enjoy and not offering services that I don’t enjoy; I feel this is where I can really hone in on the skills I have gained. But I ALWAYS advise haridressers young in the industry to work on being an all rounded colourist and stylist: this will give you more opportunities to work in any salon or for any brand and you just never know you may fall in love with a specific skill that people will look to you as an expert in that field.
I never saw myself working off the salon floor but after being offered the opportunity to work on publications then film and tv I have been the personal stylist and colourist for many celebrities and Hollywood producers! This has also opened up the opportunity to support women in the fields of Sports, CEOs of top companies, Professionals in many different fields and Artists who are constantly in the media. I am so passionate about helping these women and being part of their journeys!
