We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kyle J. Scimone a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kyle J. , so great to be with you and I think a lot of folks are going to benefit from hearing your story and lessons and wisdom. Imposter Syndrome is something that we know how words to describe, but it’s something that has held people back forever and so we’re really interested to hear about your story and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
No matter what your skill set, imposter syndrome is a crippling image of yourself and it really needs to be addressed. First and most importantly, put in the work! So many people feel inadequate in their profession, and I was definitely one. That was until I started producing more work but not only that, improved work. Focus on people you strive to be like. What are their habits? What are they doing that you aren’t? Make the adjustments, and create your own style. Being unique is the best way to avoid being an imposter.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am an indie filmmaker living in Los Angeles, I also work full time as a chef. I currently have a short film in post-production and a series hitting pre-production this September.
With the current WGA and SAG strikes taking place, independent filmmaking is going to re-solidify its foundation in the world of arts.
Studio execs don’t care about art, they care about money. Those of us that do care, are going to keep creating because it’s what we’ve always done. And I encourage anyone that wants to be apart of it to get involved now.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
1. Resiliency.
Not everyone gets a lucky break. But keep working, and good things will eventually happen.
2. Planning
Doesn’t matter how you create your plan, pen and pad, on the computer, mentally, whatever.. make a plan and execute what’s within your control.
3. Hope
Might sound corny, but keep the hope alive. Success is not guaranteed, but if you quit, you have guaranteed your failure.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
Absolutely. I thrive on creative collaboration. Any artist that wants to reach out on social media or via email, I will definitely respond. I’ve met a lot of talented and passionate people on this journey and a good amount of those connections started with a simple hello.
Cheers!
