We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kyle Langan. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kyle below.
Hi Kyle, great to have you with us today and excited to have you share your wisdom with our readers. Over the years, after speaking with countless do-ers, makers, builders, entrepreneurs, artists and more we’ve noticed that the ability to take risks is central to almost all stories of triumph and so we’re really interested in hearing about your journey with risk and how you developed your risk-taking ability.
I think taking risks takes practice. Because at the end of the day, taking a risk is all about how much fearlessness you have. So when you start small with your risks and try new things, you realize that the outcome of those small risks don’t make or break your life. And then gradually, you advance your risks as your fearlessness develops more.
I just launched my first line of apparel for my brand, Hamptons to Hollywood – a capsule collection of crewneck sweatshirts. It was scary to make the financial investment needed to create the products, undertake the marketing, wonder if people would buy them – all of it. And I realized I went through with the plan because of three aspects
1) PAST RISK: I’ve taken risks in the past, so I knew the launch’s success or failure would break me.
2) SELF-BELIEF: I believed in myself (that I would work hard to make it as successful as possible) and I believed in the product (that people would enjoy it, too).
3) NO REGRETS: I would rather have risked something and failed – because with failure comes learning – than to have never tried it all and regret it.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I’m really fortunate to be able to have built a business that works in a few different verticals, which always makes me job fun and exciting. I formed a business called KJL Media, which has three branches: social media consulting, publishing, and a digital media brand called Hamptons to Hollywood.
As a social media consultant, my team and I create content and advise on social media best practices for clients to elevate their presence on social media to build their businesses.
As an author, I have written three fiction books. UNCHARTED WATERS, UNCHARTED HORIZONS, and the bestseller, CONFESSIONS OF A CALLBOY. Writing is my passion and my books tell stories about people stepping outside their comfort zones and what happens on the other side of fear.
And HamptonstoHollywood.com is a lifestyle website that was founded 12 years ago as a destination to get more access into the casually luxurious life of the Hamptons and Los Angeles through content on fashion, food, fitness, and travel. It was named the Top Lifestyle Blog of the Year in 2015 and 2017. And we just launched a new line of crewneck sweatshirts, which are currently on sale! I’m so excited about these. They are the softest, coziest crewnecks on the market and made with organic and recycled materials due to our commitment to sustainability.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
1. Be fearless. When you’re just starting out, it’s okay to make mistakes as you find your footing. You’re going to make mistakes no matter what, but if you’re scared about whether or not you’ll succeed, you’ll always be holding yourself back. When you’re fearless about what you’re doing, nothing can hold you back. And that opens you up to amazing opportunities.
2. Be curious: I love learning new things about new people. And when you have an interest in areas outside your wheelhouse, you’ll learn so much more and figure out little nuggets of wisdom you can apply to your own life.
3. Be good at talking to people: This is HUGE. We live in an increasingly digital society today, where everyone is on their phone, but nothing builds relationships faster than being a good conversationalist. If you can be social, engage in both meaningful and surface conversation, make someone feel seen/heard, and “work a room” I really do believe the world is your oyster.
Who is your ideal client or what sort of characteristics would make someone an ideal client for you?
An ideal client for me is an open-minded business owner who loves to explore and who has a desire to optimize their life.
When I work with a potential new client, there are different products or services that might initially attracted them, but who can benefit from everything we offer. For example, if I’m interested in a business owner who also has a hobby of traveling, then I could consult with them about expanding their social media presence to grow their business AND give them access to all the travel guides we publish on HamptonstoHollywood.com. Then, once they start reading the travel guides, they’ll also be exposed to our crewneck sweatshirts, which they may want to buy, or take an interest in our Hamptons to Hollywood Fitness Program.
It’s all about finding the right client who we can then offer even more and more benefits to in an effort to really make them feel good and optimize their life and work.
