Meet Kyle Mccullough

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kyle Mccullough. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Kyle, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?

My secret weapon when is comes to having confidence and high self-esteem has always came from my ability to draw.
Developing a skill or discipline that most people cannot do is something that I still cherish to this day. Its a daily practice that I commit to everyday and never feels like a burden or an obligation.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

Currently I have fallen back in love with oil painting. The constant challenges keeps me interested throughout the entire process. When I was a kid making art felt raw, fun and completely unfiltered. In adulthood it can be an up hill battle against time. But I have some secret weapons ADHD, the most adorable toddler you have ever seen, an amazing wife and a very supportive family.

In 2009 I created a body of work exploring the four seasons. These works were created inside four hand bound sketchbooks. Foggy, abstract paintings and drawings populated each page using dry and wet media. This new body of work will further distill the images found in the four seasons. Leaf piles, fire pits, waves, backyard pools, light filtering through trees and fences. As well as people close to me.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

I believe the most important area you can focus on to improve your work is yourself. If you do not understand what it is you love about yourself, art or life then you will not be happy. This is something only you can figure out.

Reaching a high level of skill in any part of life is difficult. The best thing you can do is just show up no matter what. I am a very firm believer that inspiration, motivation and even mentorship is not enough. When you can control emotional states and use discipline to keep the artwork going everyday… that is where the secret lies.

What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?

This time last year I completed a large (36 x 48″) oil painting commission. It was portrait of six dogs all piled together. The size and number of dogs required full dedication everyday for a month. Also I built a huge box within a box that held the piece until it reached its new home. It was an amazing art-life challenge coordinating family responsibilities, art time and everything required to strike that perfect work life balance. This is a painting that I come back to as a reminder of what is possible.
