Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kyle Nash. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Kyle , thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?
I find creativity in music. The nostalgia a song can bring at any moment. I also find creativity in my family, tv shows documentaries on cooking, drawing techniques, and travel. I enjoy seeing someone who works at their craft and has the discipline to carry that out daily.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
My name is Kyle Nash, Hooghan lani nishłį́, Tachii’nii bashishchiin, Ashiihi dashicheii, Todich’ii’nii dashinalí. These are my four clans, in my culture this is how we introduce ourselves. I am Navajo and grew up in a town called Kirtland, which is located in northern New Mexico. I now reside in Scottsdale, AZ. I am focused on building our family business. We have a line of stickers, t-shirts, art prints and jewelry. We sell at art festivals, Powwows, parades and pop up events. We turn my portrait drawings into stickers, t-shirt designs and prints. It’s definitely a family run business. My wife also creates designs for t-shirts and stickers which we will reveal here in the next few weeks. My kids do everything from helping setup the booth, inventory, sales and posing for portraits. Our fall season for events is coming up so we will be all over Arizona traveling and selling at these events. We are an indigenous owned small business. Our culture definitely plays a huge role in growing out business.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
One of the qualities I think for any craft is passion. Being sincere when you create. I don’t think that can be taught. Investing in yourself and believing in your work. There is an audience for everything out there. You just have to find it.
You can always count on hard work to get you through a lot of roadblocks. All the behind the scenes stuff that people don’t see is where the real work starts. Having the right mindset when going into a small business and setting long term and short term goals. Keep an open mind and listen to people who want to share their knowledge. That is a big key in our growth over the past year. Listening and learning from others.
What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?
I feel like our understanding of our audience and clientele. The interactions we have with people tell us a lot of what one is willing to buy. It can be a little difficult because at one event we could have a big seller and at the next event the same product does not sell. We believe in our product and deigns so I think this upcoming season we will be satisfied.
