We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kym Royal. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kym below.
Kym, so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?
As a black woman with a prosthetic leg (due to a motorcycle accident in 2018), I’m typically the only one in the room that looks like me. My approach is to just be my authentic self. I enjoy meeting people, so I draw from that strength and seek out opportunities where I can network and get the word out about my business. Sometimes being the only person in the room that looks like me is an advantage because I bring a new and diverse perspective to the group, and I find people are interested in anything that’s unique and one of a kind. If someone remembers that the woman with the prosthetic leg they met at “XYZ” event is the owner of Salon Royal hair studio, and they go to my website (salonroyals.com) to book an appointment, I consider that a win.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
As a hair salon owner, my primary focus is on creating an exceptional experience for my clients while delivering top-notch hair care services. From trendy haircuts to intricate color treatments and styling, my salon is a haven for self-expression and confidence-building transformations.
What excites me the most about my role is the opportunity to connect with people on a personal level, understanding their unique style preferences and helping them achieve their desired look. Every day presents new challenges and opportunities for creativity, whether it’s experimenting with innovative techniques or staying ahead of the latest industry trends.
At my salon, I prioritize not only the quality of my services but also the overall atmosphere, ensuring that every client feels welcomed, valued, and pampered from the moment they walk in. My brand is built on a foundation of professionalism, creativity, and genuine care for my clients’ satisfaction.
In terms of what’s new, I’m thrilled to announce the launch of my luxury hair spa services. Clients can sit back and enjoy a relaxing scalp massage complete with a steam hair detox treatment, aromatherapy, and organic products specially formulated to nourish and enhance all hair types. Stay tuned for exciting events and promotions as I continue to elevate the beauty experience at Salon ROYAL!

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
In no particular order, I would say the three areas of knowledge that were most impactful in my journey have been:
1. Creativity: The ability to innovate and offer unique styles or services sets you apart in a competitive industry. I foster creativity by staying inspired through art, fashion, and trends. Experimenting with new techniques and not being afraid to think outside the box.
2. Business acumen: Understanding the financial aspects of running a salon, managing inventory, pricing services, and marketing effectively is crucial for sustained success. I invest time in learning about business management through courses and networking to strengthen this skill.
3. Customer service: Building strong relationships with clients fosters loyalty and positive word-of-mouth referrals. I focus on delivering exceptional experiences, actively listening to clients’ needs, and adapting my approach to ensure my clients are satisfied with their hair.
For those early in their journey, my advice would be to prioritize continuous learning and growth in the above-mentioned areas: Seek out mentors or networking opportunities within the industry, invest in ongoing education, and always prioritize the client experience.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
This year’s goal is to collaborate with at least one organization that helps disadvantaged individuals in our community prepare for job interviews by offering free hair services. Additionally, I’m looking to expand my team with an assistant to accommodate the growing demand for my services. If any organization would like to collaborate with me, I can be reached via email: [email protected].
