We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kynsi Saye a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kynsi, thanks for taking the time to share your lessons with our community today. So, let’s jump right in – one of the most essential skills for unlocking our potential is self-discipline. Where does your self-discipline come from?
My self-discipline comes from my childhood, being involved in activities such as dance and gymnastics while also being in school. Ever since I can remember I was involved in some type of extracurricular activity. I can remember taking ice-skating lessons, violin lessons, gymnastics and dance. All of them were at different parts of my life but they all involved self-discipline. Whenever I chose an activity, I wanted to give 100% effort into it and try to be the very best I could be at it. Once I found dance, I had dreams of being on a competitive dance team which required a lot of commitment. In High school I started competing in poms and then went on to a dance company. We practiced 3+ hours a day every day and usually had competitions on the weekends. While also being in high school, this required an immense amount of self-discipline in order to be successful at both dance and school. I am a routine person so once I found a daily routine that worked, I stuck with it. It consisted of wake up, school, dance, bed (with a lot of eating in between). After highschool. I realized just how much being on a competitive dance company taught me. It taught me resiliency, confidence, hard work, effort and most of all, self discipline.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am the owner and founder of Kompass Apparel. Kompass Apparel is an outdoor-inspired lifestyle clothing brand for men and women. I help active souls discover the perfect blend of comfy, and chic threads that enrich their everyday lives and elevate their adventures. I believe that your outfit should make you feel confident and comfortable so that you can enjoy your adventures to the fullest.
I design all of the artwork my self and print it in Denver at Blackout Screenprinting. When designing my products, I take into consideration the material, color, style and fit. I prefer to choose a high quality fabric that is going to last a long time and is appealing to every type of person. the colors I use compliment each other to create a cohesive collection.
Kompass Apparel is my brand of neutral, earth tones. But I also have a very fun and bright brand that I created just a few years ago called FitFruit. FitFruit is a fitness inspired clothing brand that is derived from my love for fitness and movement. I am a personal trainer and CrossFit coach and I had the idea of creating a brand that would appeal to Crossfitters, yogis, really anyone that loves working out.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Consistency is a big quality that is important when starting a business. It takes a lot of time and patience but if you show up everyday, put in the work and trust the process, your success will come.
Optimism is very important. Owning a business is like a rollercoasters with big ups and big downs. One day you may feel like your taking a step forward, the next day, 3 steps back. Always have an optimistic attitude and it will make all the difference.
Never stop learning. Even if you have owned a business for a long time, you can never know too much. I have learned so much from fellow entrepreneurs by asking questions and networking. Stay humble and be a sponge, absorb everything you can!
Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
My Fiance Manny has been so helpful throughout our entire relationship. He is an open ear when I need to talk through something and always has good ideas that are different than my ideas. He is also a business owner so our mindset is similar which is extremely helpful! He knows a ton of people and has helped me network so much which has been a game changer for my business. He also pushes my out of my comfort zone to talk to people or to try new ideas that I may not try on my own or talk myself out of. Also fun fact, he owns a CrossFit Gym and that was where I was inspired to start FitFruit, so who knows, if he wasn’t in my life would FitFruit even exist?
