We were lucky to catch up with Kyoko W P recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kyoko, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
I grew up in an abusive home. Then I married an abusive man. I stayed in the marriage despite the abuse for a while before I realized this is not right. Not right for me and not right for my daughters. So I planned and packed and one night we made our escape.
I also suffer from numerous debilitating chronic illnesses, mental illness and diseases. I fight daily with the symptoms. After Covid I developed a heart condition and now have to use a walker or wheel chair.
But despite all that I keep going. I could be bitter, anger out resentful. But why? I choose to take what’s happened to me and share it with the world so anyone out there knows they’re not alone.
Yes I still hurt. But I have so many other reasons to be happy and to live
If I can survive all that and keep going…. My resilience shines.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
My name is Kyoko and I am a poet. I just published my third collection, “ Still Her”
I’ve been writing since I would put pencil to paper. It has been my therapy for years until life got busy and I put down pencil.
Then in 2021 I had to medically resign from my job I loved and go on disability. I was depressed and lost. And then.. I found my pencil. Three months later I published my first collection. Six months after that I published my second collection. I published my third book this year and have started on my fourth and my fifth collection.
My books are raw. They explore deep emotions. There is pain but there is also joy and love.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I think that having immense empathy for others, and having understanding and knowledge of loss, grief, abuse, mental illness and chronic illness has made a great impact on my writing and how I share.
My advice for anyone early in their journey is to just keep writing. Always. Keep writing. Be genuine. Be sincere. Be authentic.
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
When I feel overwhelmed I put my pen and paper down and take a break. Watch mindless tv, read a book, listen to music or take a walk. Something will come to you and inspire you. Take a break from the project and just write what you’re feeling. Let it all out. Sometimes getting it all out on paper and out of your head is the best thing you can do
