Meet Kytia L’amour

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kytia L’amour a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Kytia, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
I believe a question everyone on Earth has asked themselves in one form or another is “What is the meaning of life?”. I’ve asked myself this before, but it actually took me well into adulthood to find out what my purpose was and how to pursue it. I grew up in the church, so my perspective was always through a biblical lens. Even though I always believed in God, I thought the extent of fulfilling my calling when I was younger was to be a good person and follow the commandments laid out in scripture.

Interesting how hitting rock bottom can sometimes give you more clarity…and a desperation to figure your life out. When we were around 7 years married with a two year old, me and my husband went through one of the most discouraging times in our lives. We were losing our home, losing our friends, dealing with strained family relationships, and burnt out trying to figure out how to provide for ourselves when every door to opportunity seemed to slam shut in our faces.

We ended up pressing a reset button and moving in with my in-laws. As much as we felt like failures, we knew that we couldn’t let this time go to waste, so we decided to start from scratch and really figure out how we ended up on the wrong path and how we were going to get to the right one. It was through prayer when I was asking God “What do you want me to do?!” He answered simply, “Share Me with the world.”

At this point in my career, I had taken a break from the entertainment industry to focus on motherhood, but was still using writing and YouTube as my creative outlets. I had no plan other than to grow on YouTube and become and influencer. God had other plans. It wasn’t until I focused on sharing Him with the world that my career started to take off on YouTube, I then booked ministry opportunities, I also acquired high paying brand sponsorships and eventually received three book deals with a publisher that had seen my writing online.

I felt like I cracked the code to my purpose and it was simply this: using my gifts and talents to glorify God. I had always had an interest in teaching, writing, performing but had no idea how that all went together because I hadn’t fully surrendered those desires to God. Now that I have surrendered by asking Him for instructions every step of the way, it all makes sense and has brought me the success I had been struggling to gain on my own.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
It’s always interesting when someone asks me what I do because I often think to myself “Where do I begin?” I spent a lot of my young adulthood in the world of acting, singing, and modeling. Performing is something I definitely still yearn to do more of, but I believe there are seasons to everything. My current season is homeschooling and raising my kids with my wonderful husband Jerrell, but I’m still able to contribute to the world in my own little corner of the internet through social media and my website www.lamourinchrist.com where I share devotionals and ministry videos to encourage others in their walk with Christ.

I’ve been blessed to author a few paperback devotionals (which are available on my website) that range from a month long devotional anyone can relate to as well as two other devotionals about pregnancy from a Christian perspective and navigating Postpartum Depression. I still post regularly on my YouTube channel and Instagram. You can easily find me by searching “Kytia L’amour”.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
One skill that has always stuck with me no matter what season of life I’m in is writing. My love of literature began by borrowing books from the library as a child, writing poetry, and writing plays and skits. That evolved into blogging my life and thoughts online as a young adult. I honed in on sharing my testimonies and what I’ve learned in my walk with God, and that’s definitely what most of my readers have resonated with as I’ve gotten older.

When it comes to writing, I believe being an avid reader when I was a child and teen helped me so much in understanding different writing styles and how to communicate more effectively. It also expanded my vocabulary so much because I learned terms that you don’t often use in day to day life that are very helpful in adding more “color” to a block of text.

Universally, you can say this about any skill: keep studying. I also do this with social media and learning things that will help me in my marriage, homemaking, and motherhood. I’m consistently digesting new information so that I can be aware of new ideas as well as keep checking in to see if there’s anywhere I need to pivot in my career to be more effective or efficient.

Do you think it’s better to go all in on our strengths or to try to be more well-rounded by investing effort on improving areas you aren’t as strong in?
This reminds me of talking to a friend who was starting a bakery business. Her specialty was baking cookies, and when people would ask her why she focused only on cookies instead of expanding her items, she would say “Because I want to make the best cookies I possibly can instead of offering a variety of items that are ‘just ok'”. That got me to thinking about my own career and the different things I’ve been interested in at different times.

One pattern I seemed to have similar to hers was “going all in” on whatever I was doing. When I was in the peak of my acting career, for example, that was my main focus. I was going on auditions all the time, submitting for new roles, and focused on being the most professional actress I could be on set in order to build great relationships with casting directors and directors on set. That worked for me because I was consistently getting booked to work with the same people over and over again because of my work ethic, skill and availability.

Similarly, once I was focused on motherhood, even when no one was paying me I would post as much as I could on my blog (in a healthy way) and that’s how people reached out to me with paid opportunities to author guest posts for very popular online blogs. Once I shifted more to faith based YouTube content, my consistency and quality garnered the attention of a media group that hired me to do online bible studies for their large social media following.

I don’t think you need to put all of your eggs in one basket, so to speak, but whatever it is that you are focused on at a time should be your primary focus. Getting better and better at doing that thing is something you should take the time to do if you’re looking for bigger opportunities and collaborations.
