Meet Dolphin Brown

We recently connected with Dolphin Brown and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Dolphin, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
I was persuaded to take television news as an elective, and while I didn’t enjoy being in front of the camera, I fell in love with the behind-the-scenes work. I went on to study video production and other visual arts at a magnet high school and then was accepted into Savannah College of Art and Design a year early where I got my BFA. I spent my time there honing my technical skills and being exposed to creative influences. I was extremely fortunate to be able to connect with visionary video artist Dara Birnbaum, and my purpose became clear. I knew I wanted to combine my interests in art and video to create something new and unique.

At the time, I was unable to bring my artistic vision fully to life due to the limitations of technology. As a result, I spent over two decades working in the corporate world, setting aside my artistic ambitions to pursue financial stability. Life, however, has a way of nudging us back to our true purpose.

When the pandemic struck and I found myself unexpectedly let go from the confines of corporate America, I was given the opportunity of finding a different type of life. I spent months searching my soul for my true calling. It was during this introspective period that a moment of clarity washed over me—an awakening that reminded me of the artist buried within.

Finding my purpose was not a linear process, but a dance of exploration, setbacks, and ultimately, self-rediscovery. It is a reminder that our true calling may lie dormant within us, waiting for the right moment to resurface. Today I get to be the person I know I am meant to be—an artist determined to create, inspire, and leave an indelible mark on the world.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I create video “paintings” by taking video of everyday things and turning them into abstract works of art that allow you to shift your energy and mindset. These “paintings” hang on your wall like any painting, but they move and have sound.

At their core, video paintings are essentially moving images that have been imbued with the aesthetic qualities of traditional painting. Instead of simply capturing a moment in time, like a photograph or traditional video, video paintings often employ complex layering techniques and digital manipulation to create a visual experience that is both dynamic and immersive.

I have always believed video can be treated as fine art, not just a technical creation. And like all art, I believe video should push the boundaries of its technology and defy conventional “television” restrictions. I build unique visual layouts, collaging together moving images into deeply layered visuals, and intermingling distinct audio streams, video art can create a world of sound and visuals that envelopes you. It goes beyond the canvas and brings you fully into a different reality.

I sell completed works on my website, but I also take commissions for custom works. I love collaborating with clients to create something uniquely for them.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
One of the most crucial qualities that has shaped my artistic journey is the openness to creativity and exploration. By embracing unexpected opportunities, such as taking a TV news elective in 8th grade, I stumbled upon a passion that would define my life. My advice is to remain open-minded and curious, willing to step outside your comfort zone and explore. True passion may lie in uncharted territories, waiting to be discovered. Creativity lies at the heart of artistic expression, enabling us to think imaginatively and see the world through a unique lens. Embracing creativity allows us to challenge conventions, break boundaries, and offer fresh perspectives – no matter what you are doing. Exploration, closely intertwined with creativity, involves venturing into unexplored territories, experimenting with new techniques, discovering novel approaches to things, and uncovering hidden passions and strengths. Embrace playfulness and experimentation in your creative process, allowing room for mistakes and learning. Trust your instincts and let your unique voice shine through, as it is through these explorations that you will uncover the true depth of your potential.

Another quality that has served me well is being willing to take risks and fail at things. Embrace discomfort and embrace the unknown. Recognize that taking risks is an inherent part of real growth and development. Trust your intuition and follow your instincts, even if it means deviating from the norm. Surround yourself with a supportive network that encourages and uplifts your willingness to take risks. Remember that failure is not an endpoint but a stepping stone toward growth and learning. Be resilient and view risks as opportunities for self-discovery and personal evolution. That risk-taking is the only way you will reach new heights.

Who is your ideal client or what sort of characteristics would make someone an ideal client for you?
My ideal client connects deeply with the essence of my art, specifically with the mystical and spiritual elements interwoven with the natural world and transformed by the digital age. They resonate with the fusion of light, color, and ethereal sounds that evoke auras, energy, and patterns from both the natural and spiritual realms. Through this connection, they find a meditative state within my artwork, experiencing a sense of peace, serenity, and oneness with the cosmos.

The intention behind my art is to reconcile the personal and spiritual selves of the viewer with the interconnectedness of the universe. My video paintings serve as a portal to a world beyond the physical, inviting viewers to transcend the chaos and turbulence of the external world and find solace in the beauty and harmony of life. The immersive experience of my art, with its multi-layered audio soundtrack and moving visuals, aims to create a space for contemplation, introspection, and a deep sense of connection to something greater.

In summary, my ideal client connects with the mystical and spiritual elements in my art, finding solace and serenity within the immersive experience of your video paintings. They resonate with the intention behind your art, which is to reconcile personal and spiritual selves and seek unity, peace, and connection to the cosmos. Through your art, they find a pathway to transcendence, self-reflection, and a deeper understanding of themselves and the world.
