We recently connected with L.M. Rhys and have shared our conversation below.
L.M., so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
I feel like finding one’s purpose is probably one of the biggest journeys any creative person can go on. I discovered my passion for writing when I was younger, simply by writing short stories in my free time just for the fun of it. Not for anyone else to read, but just for myself. During my angsty teenage years, I experimented with songwriting, but I realized that I’m too introverted to openly bare my soul that way. Not to mention, the ideas I wanted to convey seemed a bit too long-winded for a three-minute and thirty-second song.
Throughout it all, I discovered that writing served as the perfect outlet for all my stress, anxiety, and other random thoughts. The more I wrote and shared my experiences with my friends, the more I realized that the feelings I was grappling with were more common than I had realized.
One of the things you’ll notice in the Fates Chosen Series is that I’m really big on character driven stories. It was important to me that my characters felt real. Seeing ourselves in a character, not just physically but emotionally and mentally, can sometimes hit us much harder than we realize. I can confidently say that there have been times when I’ve read a character’s internal monologue, and they’ve uttered something that deeply resonated with me, surprising me in helping to identify and recognize a feeling I couldn’t quite articulate on my own. That can be life changing for someone—I know it has been for me.
All that to say, I write so that even if one person reads my stories and it makes someone smile, or feel something deeply, or feel less alone—I’d say I’ve fulfilled my purpose.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
As an indie fantasy author, I have a passion for weaving together the lives of captivating and dynamic characters in a world filled with magic and adventure. At the moment, I’m working on completing the Fates Chosen Series. Currently, Fates Chosen, Fates Ruined: A Fates Chosen Novella, and Fates Released are all available on Amazon.
The final installment in the Fates Chosen Series is currently in the works! Time will tell what will happen with Evie and her friends, so stay tuned for more information on that.
As much as writing is my passion, I do have a full-time job apart from it in digital communications.
When I’m not working, I’m writing. When I’m not writing, I’m reading. When I’m not reading, I can be found blasting Spotify’s Sabrina Carpenter Mix on repeat, lounging on the beach, or posting pictures of my cat, Thor, on my Instagram story.
For those interested: I’m a Scorpio.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Resilience: This was something that I had to learn real quick! Mistakes happen. Rejections happen. Whether you’re looking to stay an indie author, looking to query agents for trad publishing, or even if it’s just during the editing process, being able to handle criticism or rejection as they come is really important. When you pour your heart and soul into a project, it’s easy to take rejection personally. It’s all about learning how to bounce back from any setbacks—pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and keep pushing forward.
Self-Motivation: Especially as an indie-author, being able to work independently and stay motivated is really important. Creating deadlines and sticking to them—whether it’s writing, publishing, or marketing related. Pushing yourself to stay motivated is key; no one else is going to do it.
Passion: When you have a passion for anything, you want to talk about it. You want to immerse yourself in it. That’s exactly what’s needed as an indie author. From the moment you start writing, to the moment you release your finished project to the world, passion should be woven into every second. If you genuinely love what you do, it shows. Passion and excitement can be contagious.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
A really important part of this industry is building community. I’m always looking for other fantasy authors to chat with about their projects or the industry in general. I think it’s important to have like-minded people to be able to bounce ideas off of or to collaborate with in any way. My Instagram (@lmrhys_) is definitely a great place to start a conversation.
