We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful La Shawna Griffith. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with La Shawna below.
La Shawna , so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
I think my confidence developed as I matured into an adult. Growing up in Barbados I was not always as confident as I am now as I came from more humble beginnings living in the Mapp Hill, St. Michael area. But over the years, as I grew into my purpose I developed the confidence to know that I was brilliant and had a purpose. With that realization, came my self-esteem as I now wanted to carry myself in a way that reflected the plan and purpose that I have sought to achieve by using my talents to promote social change.
Moreover, my confidence and self-esteem grew due to my involvement in the arts as a performance poet, as I was able to curb my stage fright and also learn how to use my voice for social change.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
What do I do? There is so much to tell!
I am the Chief Executive Officer of Write Right PR Services a Public Relations and Digital Media Company that operates from Bridgetown Barbados. What is exciting about being a businesswoman in Barbados is the amazing people and entities I am privileged to work with. In June 2024, I had the amazing opportunity to be a part of the National Organizing Committee Public Relations Team for the ICC T20 Men’s World Cup which was an amazing fete.
I am still pinching myself about this amazing opportunity, as Barbados is hosting nine of the ICC T20 Men’s World Cup Games and to know that my company which is just a mere four years old has been granted the opportunity to be a part of the public relations team that is capturing the content of the ICC T20 Men’s World Cup is truly an honour.
I also am grateful because many persons in my age bracket do not get such amazing opportunities so early into their professional careers and I am thankful for this amazing opportunity that allows me to interview and speak with fans all over the world who are in Barbados to celebrate cricketing excellence.
As a PR professional, this is truly the pinnacle of my professional career and I am so thankful that I have been able to achieve it. However, I did not reach this achievement alone, I must thank the amazing person on my team, the Creative and Technical Director at Write Right PR Services, Akeem Chandler-Prescod, who has been the lead videographer and content creator on this project.
I think this is the first of many international events that our company will cover, and I truly look forward to seeing what else is in store for us.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back I think the three qualities that were most important in my journey were learning journalism, public speaking and content writing. These skills helped to develop the Public Relations Professional that I am today.
The advice I have for persons who are young in their journey would be to have a passion for what you do, always be eager to learn, have a mentor and continue to strive for excellence, once you do these things you will become a top Public Relations professional in no time.
To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
I think the most impactful thing my parents did for me was teach me not to be afraid to be myself. My parents, Sharron Gibson and the late Sean Griffith, taught me to be resilient and fearless and never be afraid to do what I know to be right. From a young age, they would have allowed me to embrace my creative pursuits and supported me every single step of the way.
Their guidance and belief in me have shaped the person that I am today, who is bold, confident and fearless in everything that I do as I know that there is nothing I cannot do once I put my mind to it.
I must thank them for their belief in me and for allowing me to be myself whilst fostering my creative expression and for that I am truly thankful for them.
