We recently connected with Lacey Nolan and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Lacey, thank you for being such a positive, uplifting person. We’ve noticed that so many of the successful folks we’ve had the good fortune of connecting with have high levels of optimism and so we’d love to hear about your optimism and where you think it comes from.
I have always been an optimistic person, sometimes the annoying optimistic person. It is very easy to immediately think of the negative, and a long time ago I trained myself to go towards the opposite. Keeping a sense of optimism, especially in times of trial, help me through tough situations. I’ve always believed the old adage of “whether you think you are, or think you aren’t, you are right.” That not only goes for what you think of yourself, but situations you are in. By keeping a positive outlook, I strongly believe you can change the outcome.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am the owner of a makers boutique in Hudson, WI called Beloved Makers & Co. We are a collective of regional makers that have come together to provide high-quality handmade goods to our community and visitors. I am proud to represent the makers and help them succeed in their individual businesses.
Through September 2024, we host a maker in the shop on the first Friday of each month to come in and showcase their products and make it a fun, interactive experience for our customers. On Friday, June 7th, Breanna Ellevold will be joining us from 5:00 – 8:00 pm for a create your own clay earrings evening. Our previous events have included a succulent bar with Nicole of Planting Joy Co., and create your own crystal bracelet with Lunabella Bracelets.
Frequently, we do consider new makers to join our shop. Unfortunately we are not able to accept all products presented to us, but we love to consider everyone who reaches out!
We’ve all got limited resources, time, energy, focus etc – so if you had to choose between going all in on your strengths or working on areas where you aren’t as strong, what would you choose?
I am very new to business ownership. I took a small business class back in 2004, and that was it. I went all-in on my shop and very quickly. My dad has owned his own business for longer than I have been alive and he’s always told me to “do what you do best, and hire out the rest.” It is such great advice because if you are starting your own business, you aren’t going to be great at everything. The areas that you are great at will come easy, but it’s the areas that you aren’t as strong that will bog you down and eat up all your time. If it’s not something you enjoy (in my case, accounting) it will take twice as long as it needs to and will only frustrate you. I decided to invest in an accountant, and that frees up my time to do what I do well. That doesn’t mean you can’t learn those things, eventually you could if you don’t want to pay for someone else to do it.
