We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Lacey Tatum a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Lacey, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
I’ve always considered myself a jack of all trades, with a wide range of artistic interests and skills. However, it wasn’t until the COVID-19 pandemic hit that I had the opportunity to reflect on my passions and strengths. During this time, I took a deep dive into self-discovery, contemplating the many things I was good at and the areas I felt truly passionate about. Among the multitude of skills I possessed, nails had always been on my list, but I wouldn’t say I was exceptionally good at it.
That’s when I made a crucial decision – I was going to give nails a chance. I realized that to find my true purpose and excel in a particular field, I needed to commit myself to it wholeheartedly. So, I told myself that I would focus on one thing and practice relentlessly to become exceptionally skilled at it.
This decision wasn’t made lightly. I knew it would require dedication, hard work, and a willingness to learn and improve continuously. I set out on a journey to refine my nail artistry, taking courses, studying techniques, and practicing diligently. Over time, I witnessed a transformation in my skills, and, more importantly, in my passion for doing nails.
What was once a skill on my long list of abilities has now become a profound passion and a fulfilling career. I’ve discovered that doing nails is not just a job; it’s a way for me to express my artistic creativity, attention to detail, and a deep sense of satisfaction. The journey hasn’t been without its challenges, but every obstacle I’ve faced has only strengthened my resolve and propelled me forward.
Now, I’m proud to say that I’ve found my purpose in doing nails. It’s a journey that COVID-19 allowed me the time to explore, and I haven’t looked back since. I’m committed to continuously improving and growing in this field, and I want to inspire others to follow their passions and find their own sense of purpose.”

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back on my journey as a nail artist, I found that three things made a big difference:
Creativity: Being creative is crucial in nail art. To boost your creativity, practice different nail art techniques, get inspiration from nature, fashion, and art, and try out new ideas. Keeping a portfolio of your work can help you track your progress and inspire you.
Technical Nail Skills: Having a strong foundation in technical nail skills is essential. Practice these skills regularly and consider taking professional courses to learn and master various techniques. Stay updated with the latest industry standards and innovations.
Client Relationships and Service: Building good relationships with clients and providing excellent customer service is a key to success. Develop strong communication skills, listen to your clients, and create a welcoming experience. Happy clients are more likely to come back and recommend you to others.
For those starting their journey as nail artists, here’s some advice:
Practice regularly to improve your skills.
Find a mentor or experienced nail artist to learn from.
Take professional courses to build your knowledge.
Stay updated with the latest trends in the industry.
Create an online presence to showcase your work.
Focus on building your profile, and clients will come as you gain experience and build your reputation.
