We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful LaDonna Lane. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with LaDonna below.
LaDonna, so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
I keep my creativity alive by always researching new ideas. I love making jewelry and I’m always looking for new supplies and colors. I want to offer my customers new jewelry all the time.
My family and friends keep my creativity alive also. When I’m down, I talk to them, and they help me to keep creating.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I started making jewelry in May of 2012 after I lost my job. I decided that I wasn’t going to sit at home and feel sorry for myself while I look for another job, so I had my sister who at the time was making jewelry show me how to make a couple of pieces and look at me now!
I love making jewelry! It’s my PASSION! I love wearing the pieces I make and have people ask me where did I get it from and being able to tell them that I made it. It’s such a good feeling and I love to hear the wonderful comments from customers. I have customers all over the world just from FaceBook, Instagram & referrals. I have customers in Germany, France, Spain and the United States.
My goal is to expand my jewelry line and hopefully to have my own boutique in multiple states.
All of my pieces are wearable art!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Passion/Great Customer Service/Fashion sense
I would advise anyone who are early in their journey is to do a lot of research and to build your community. I started back in 2012, and I couldn’t find a lot of information about making jewelry. I found classes in my neighborhood and searched for videos. Later down the road social media was very helpful & I joined groups that was helpful & connected with some great people.
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
When I feel overwhelmed, I reach out to my friends to talk about how I’m feeling and most of the time I take a break. Being a business owner is a lot of work and overwhelming. Especially if you’re doing it by yourself. I take a couple of months off to rest, recharge and figure out my next steps. This is very helpful for me.
