We recently connected with Laila L and have shared our conversation below.
Laila , thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
I gained resilience from the teachings of my parents and my family. My parents always taught me that your dreams and goals are achievable through hard work, persistence and dedication. They always pushed me to keep at my craft no matter how hard it gets or how slow your progress may be. To give up is to let down your dream, and living your dream is living life.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
At birth, I was diagnosed with Sickle Cell Anemia, and struggled with the disease throughout my life. I picked up and learned my love for art from my father, as I watched him pursue his creative talents. Being in and out of the hospital as a child, I found happiness through art as I learned drawing, painting and later photography. I am currently professionally focused on photography, which I am working to build a career out of and turn into a business. My business goal is to bring joy and happiness to the clients I make and build along the way, and to gain recognition for not only my talents but my passion for my talents.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Three quality skills that were most impactful to me is to have consistency no matter how hard it gets, if you’re not working at your craft, educate yourself on it. Another important skill or knowledge is having faith in yourself, if your goal is to make it big and become what your striving to be, then you have to act like you already are and grace yourself with the title even if your just starting out. Lastly and most importantly is surrounding yourself with people who uplift you and bring you positivity. Your journey is your own, but having the right people to cheer you on makes it 10x better.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I am always looking for people to collaborate with! I want to build a community of people to call on to help each other out, I am a photographer in the DMV area and I am looking for other fellow photographers in portraiture and any events or weddings. As well as any models experienced or starting out! I’d love to collab and help build each other’s portfolio!
