We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Lakeisha Green a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Lakeisha, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
Life’s trials can be viewed as the glass half empty or half full. In life I’ve faced many obstacles that have required me to examine things in that manner…glass half empty or half full! Being able to identify that an outlet, such as a therapist/life coach, is essential to a strong mindset, allowed me to develop the skills necessary to not fold under the pressures of life’s trials. One’s response to the obstacles determines the outcome of its ending.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am a Certified Professional Life Coach and Registered Addiction Counselor. I offer individual and group support services. Talk is Cheap was started to honor those who are stifled in life due to past traumatic experiences or simply having a lack of confidence in what their next steps should be. My goal is to assist others in transforming their lives to be the best version of themselves they could imagine. This is done by identifying who we are, acknowledging life’s mistakes, shifting/building a stronger mindset, writing the vision, and executing the plan. Words mean nothing without action. Hence the name Talk is Cheap!!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Being the oldest sibling of nine, I developed leadership qualities very early. The most important quality was dependability. Showing up for others when they are not able to show up for themselves garners respect and builds rapport. This quality can be developed as long as the individual is willing to acknowledge that everyone is not the same. We all have a journey but if you can show empathy and compassion it will attract those in need.
Secondly, I’m resourceful. I developed this quality over time by always wanting to know who, what, when, where, how, or why? Asking questions always elevated me. I’m an avid learner whom never gets bored with new opportunities. This too is essential in helping others.
Lastly, resilience! No matter the circumstances I’ve always honored myself to not give up or give in. Remain vigilant and extend my self and others grace through the storm.
Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
My family has been the most influential in my current succes and accomplishments. My immediate family as well as my work family have all been patient and understanding during various time consuming projects throughout the year. They have all contributed to my success this past year by understanding the priority of my education and offering continued love, grace, and compassion with the sacrifices I had to make. It made the process easier and more valuable.
