Meet Lakesha Quarles

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Lakesha Quarles. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Lakesha below.

Lakesha, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
At a young age, my confidence was nowhere to be found being that I was looked at as a “tomboy”. I enjoyed doing things with my brothers and male cousins, like climbing trees, riding bikes with no safety gear, all of the things considered to be for a boy, lol. As I grew older and learned more about myself I realized that I wanted to show up as my best self, no matter the occasion. It started in 10th grade when my Aunt Rose, purchased me my first 2 pairs of heels and told me that if I wanted people to listen and pay attention to me then I should always show up as my best self, in my best clothes. From that moment on my confidence and self esteem went through the roof.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
As most may know, I am a Full Spectrum Doula, with a background in healthcare for over 11 years. Outside of being a Doula and attending births, I am a Clinical Medical Assistant Instructor, and a Community Liason for an amazing organization, MommiNation. I have many titles under my belt and I love all things that are related to community service and education, because it’s what needed the most nowadays. I offer many services and some products that are available on my website, www.sunflowerbirthsllc.com

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back on how far I’ve come and the qualities that may have gotten me in trouble at that time, has really helped me in to becoming the person that I am today. Those qualities are my ability to persevere no matter the situation, being resilient and standing firm in my beliefs, while also having a strong mindset and understanding of how things work. Those qualities have helped me to show up as my best self and gave me the confidence to succeed in my business and career. My advice to others is to always stay true to yourself and stand up for what you believe in. The rest will work itself out.

What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
The most impactful thing that both of my parents instilled in me is a “good work ethic”. My mom was a single mother with 4 children who worked multiple jobs to provide for my siblings and me. My father was a Police officer, so he was all about working hard and getting a good education, to get you far in life. I started working at the age of 16 and haven’t stopped yet.
