Meet LaKisha Mosley

We were lucky to catch up with LaKisha Mosley recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi LaKisha, so great to have you on the platform. There’s so much we want to ask you, but let’s start with the topic of self-care. Do you do anything for self-care and if so, do you think it’s had a meaningful impact on your effectiveness?

For self-care, I focus on a few key practices that help me stay balanced and effective. First, I prioritize regular exercise, whether it’s a brisk walk in one of Houston’s beautiful parks or working out at my apartment’s gym. This keeps my energy levels high and my mind clear. I also ensure I get enough sleep every night, as rest is crucial for maintaining focus and productivity throughout the day.

Another essential aspect of my self-care routine is spending quality time with family and friends. Social connections are vital for emotional well-being and provide a supportive network that helps me manage stress. Additionally, I practice mindfulness and meditation, which help me stay present and reduce anxiety.

Engaging in hobbies I love, such as reading or journaling, allows me to unwind and recharge. Lastly, I make time for regular health check-ups and maintain a balanced diet to support my overall physical health.

These self-care practices have significantly impacted my effectiveness. By taking care of my physical and mental well-being, I find that I am more focused, resilient, and better equipped to handle daily challenges. This holistic approach to self-care ensures I can give my best in both my personal and professional life, contributing to a more fulfilling and productive lifestyle.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

I started my event planning company twelve years ago after I had planned my 5-year vow renewal. Shortly after the ceremony, I was laid off from my company and I didn’t want to go back to a corporate job. I had so much fun planning my ceremony and connected with so many people in the industry that I decided to start my own company. I went back to the owner of the venue where I had my ceremony and told him about my new company. He immediately offered me a spot at his next open house. I attended and booked 3 clients that day. The rest is history! I’ve been blessed enough to have done countless events for some amazing clients. I’ve traveled the country doing events in Atlanta, Destin, New York, and L.A., to name a few.

I now focus on curating mental health and wellness events for business leaders who live with mental illness. I want to create a safe space to talk about mental health and receive resources needed to live full and successful lives.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Reflecting on my journey, three key qualities have had the most significant impact: resilience, effective communication, and continuous learning.

1. Resilience: The ability to bounce back from setbacks and stay motivated despite challenges has been crucial. Resilience has helped me navigate difficult times and keep moving forward. For those early in their journey, I recommend embracing failures as learning opportunities. Cultivate a positive mindset and develop coping strategies, such as seeking support from mentors and peers, to build your resilience.

2. Effective Communication: Being able to convey ideas clearly and listen actively has been vital for building relationships and achieving goals. Strong communication skills open doors to collaboration and understanding. To improve in this area, practice active listening, seek feedback on your communication style, and take opportunities to speak publicly or present your ideas.

3. Continuous Learning: Staying curious and committed to learning has allowed me to adapt and grow in an ever-changing world. Whether through formal education, online courses, or reading widely, continuous learning keeps skills sharp and knowledge up-to-date. For those starting out, I suggest setting aside regular time for learning. Identify areas of interest or skills relevant to your goals, and pursue them with enthusiasm. Embrace a growth mindset and be open to new experiences and ideas.

By focusing on these qualities and skills, you can build a strong foundation for your journey. Remember, progress is a marathon, not a sprint. Stay patient, persistent, and open to growth, and you’ll find success along the way.

Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?

When I feel overwhelmed, I employ a few strategies to help regain control and clarity. Here are some of the key steps I take:

1. Pause and Breathe: The first thing I do is take a moment to pause and practice deep breathing. This helps calm my mind and body, reducing immediate stress and allowing me to think more clearly.

2. Prioritize and Organize: I make a list of everything that’s contributing to my overwhelm. Then, I prioritize tasks based on urgency and importance. Breaking down larger tasks into smaller, manageable steps makes them feel less daunting.

3. Take Breaks: Stepping away from work for a short break can be incredibly refreshing. Whether it’s a quick walk, a few minutes of meditation, or simply stretching, taking time to recharge can boost productivity and reduce stress.

4. Limit Distractions: I minimize distractions by creating a focused work environment. This might mean turning off notifications, setting boundaries with others, or designating specific times for checking emails.

5. Seek Support: Talking to someone I trust, whether it’s a friend, family member, or colleague, helps me gain perspective and often provides valuable advice. Sometimes, just sharing my concerns can alleviate some of the burden.

6. Practice Self-Care: Ensuring I maintain my self-care routine is essential. This includes getting enough sleep, eating well, and exercising regularly. These habits keep my energy levels high and my mind clear.

7. Set Realistic Goals: I set achievable goals for myself, recognizing that it’s okay not to accomplish everything at once. Celebrating small victories along the way helps maintain motivation and morale.

Advice for Managing Overwhelm:

Acknowledge Your Feelings: It’s important to recognize and accept when you’re feeling overwhelmed. Ignoring or denying these feelings can make them worse.

Stay Organized: Keep a planner or digital calendar to manage your tasks and deadlines. Staying organized can prevent last-minute rushes and reduce stress.

Practice Mindfulness: Incorporate mindfulness techniques, such as meditation or deep breathing exercises, into your daily routine. These practices can help you stay grounded and focused.

Learn to Say No: It’s okay to decline additional responsibilities if you’re already stretched thin. Setting boundaries is crucial for maintaining balance.

Seek Professional Help: If feelings of overwhelm become persistent and unmanageable, consider talking to a mental health professional. They can provide strategies and support tailored to your needs.

By incorporating these strategies, you can better manage feelings of overwhelm and maintain your well-being, ultimately improving your overall effectiveness and satisfaction.
