Meet Lana Medicine

We recently connected with Lana Medicine and have shared our conversation below.

Lana , thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?

Keeping my creativity alive is to always transmute traumatic experiences into art. No matter what that may look like. Sometimes it may be a song full of rage other times it can be a freestyle on an open beat. My creativity comes in many different forms outside of music, I love to also express myself through poetry, dancing and crafting.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

Lana Medicine aka Big medi is an alternative hip-hop rapper from Detroit, MI. Throughout her life she has written music and has been constantly surrounded by it. Finally in 2023, She began rapping at the age of 21. The mission of Lana Medicine’s music is to heal people like her who have experienced life-altering, bone-shattering trauma. To let someone know, they are not alone and she has something that can help. Hence, take your medicine.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

One of the most important qualities that helped shape me to who I am today is resilience. Throughout my life, I have faced many challenges. Without my resilience, I would not have the tenacity to stand in front of people and heal them with my music. Another quality that is very important to me is vulnerability. In my music, one of the reasons it took me so long to begin creating publicly is because of the degree of vulnerability my music contains. In order for me to produce my best product, vulnerability is necessary and without it the music would hold no true energy. Lastly, my endurance is such an important quality to me. How long can you sustain? How disciplined are you? This all plays a part in my creations.

Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?

When I feel overwhelmed, the best thing I can do is snuggle up in bed and watch the vampire diaries. Often times, American culture can make us feel like we need to continue to work when we feel burnt out. Thus it can be very easy for you to run yourself into the ground, sometimes the best thing you can do for yourself is nothing. Listen to some music and relax. Music is medicine and people should treat it as such.
