We were lucky to catch up with Lance Daniel recently and have shared our conversation below.
Lance, thank you so much for joining us. You are such a positive person and it’s something we really admire and so we wanted to start by asking you where you think your optimism comes from?
I’m optimistic. I wasn’t always that way.
I grew up surrounded by relatives who were mostly negative. They’d say things such as, “It’s always something.” (And not a good something). “That’s how they get you.” “Murphy was right. Everything that can go wrong will go wrong and in the worst possible way.“
I thought I was being realistic and perhaps, clever by repeating those things.
I was wrong!
One day, when I was fifteen years old, and feeling down on the world, I looked at a sign on my grandfather’s ham shack (radio shack) door which read, “Come in. I’ve been expecting you. Everything is going wrong today.” For years I thought that was funny, but in that moment I saw the negativity.
I decided to do an experiment to see how I’d feel by, instead of looking at the world in a “realistic,” negative manner, I’d look for the good in things. I filtered what I said to allow the positive. I said to myself everything works out for the best. And I’ll be OK.
It took effort to become aware of what I was thinking and saying and to filter out the negative.
After a few weeks it became habit. My mood and energy improved greatly. Now, at age sixty four, I can say without a doubt it’s a practice that’s well worth the effort.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I’m a creative; a teller of stories.
I do that by being an award winning trial lawyer, a writer, an actor, a voice actor, and a creator of spec TV shows, an animated sitcom about a lawyer, a comedy short, film, and a dramatic limited series based on a true story.
Just a few weeks ago, I completed principal filming of a comedy short I wrote and produced. If it comes out well, plan to submit it to film festivals. I’m optimistic about that and my other projects.
I’d like to add, I enjoy helping people whether in my law practice, a hand up if possible, or simply to lend them an ear.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
First, life moves in cycles. If you’re experiencing a bad spell, please remember, it’s only temporary. There will be an up cycle. Often a way up cycle.
Second, Don’t allow others to talk you out of your dreams.
Third, if someone tells you something as if it’s a fact, ask yourself if what they said is true, what would follow? For example if someone says they just bought a new car, what would follow? It would follow that they know who they bought it from, what they paid for it, they ‘d have paperwork, and etc.

How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I’m currently seeking a production partner for my animated sitcom, Carbuncle!
Log line: “An attorney shines a satirical spotlight on current events via the lens of law.”
I’d also like to book more acting gigs, including Voiceover.
I’ve been in movies, commercials, TV shows, and I’ve lent my voice to a documentary, a couple trailers, several PSA’s, and volunteered my voice for promotional videos for a children’s charity.
