We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Lanita Porterfield a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Lanita , we’ve been so fortunate to work with so many incredible folks and one common thread we have seen is that those who have built amazing lives for themselves are also often the folks who are most generous. Where do you think your generosity comes from?
I got my generosity from watching my mom and aunt. Growing up I always watched my mother be so generous even when she didn’t have it to give. I also watched my aunt get so much excitement from being generous and kind to others. She loved sharing her food, love, and home with others.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
Since I was a little girl I loved fashion and putting outfits together. Being an owner of a clothing line is something that I always wanted to do but life happens. I made a promise to myself that one day I would complete the dream of opening a clothing store. I wanted to create a clothing line for women that would make them feel classy, beautiful, and confident. Honestly what finally gave me the courage to start Virtuous Closet is having a daughter that is autistic that requires a lot of resources. I eventually would like to become an entrepreneur and pursue Virtuous Closet full time so I can have more time to get even better resources for her. Unfortunately society will count little girls like her out due to their disability. I want to have more time to advocate for her and get an even better quality of life for her. I want her to know that obstacles make things harder to accomplish her dreams but not impossible .
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
In my journey I learned there will be times I will feel alone but God is always with me and what is for me will happen in his time. Be authentic . Do not allow the world to tell you who you are, you tell the world who you are and whose you are. Last but not least be kind. Many times I have no idea who I am taking to or in a room with and by me simply being kind they mention my name in rooms that I don’t have access to or may not be aware of.
How would you spend the next decade if you somehow knew that it was your last?
Getting the word about Virtuous Closet has been a challenge. I am working on my networking skills and just getting my brand out there. I am thankful for platforms allowing me the opportunity to get my name out there.
